Default Nitrogen filled tires...

The shop I work at is taking a long look at getting a nitrogen machine for tires (1. Ai lasts longer 2. rims don't leak the air 3. run cooler longer. Have you guys seen or heard much about this? We are just trying to figure out if this is something people would be interesed in.

i think is to dangerous, the only tires that i know that require nitro to fill then up is an airplane tire because air expans in high altitude and it help the tires stay cold when the land .. plus it will be to expensive.

There is all ready one shop around here that does it, they charge 5 bucks a tire.

How would it be dangerous?

I work for a fuelling company at the airport. All vechiles out there are required to have nitrogen in tires. Its not dangerous.

what happens when your at the track doing a burn out and your tire chatches on fire ? besides is not going to help perfomance wise you want your tires to get hot so they can stick .

Any tire can "catch on fire" I think your confussing Hydrogen and Nitrogen, Nitrogen is NOT flamable.

nitrogen aint flammable...its actually a more stable gas than oxygen

its not dangerious at all, nascar drivers have been using it for a long time, they SAY you get better MPG with it to but who knows.

i think its something like nitrogen is thicker then air so its alot harder for it to leak like normal air in the tire

That and the rims wont get corroded nearly as fast, not a huge problem elsewhere but up here in the frozen MN its bad, within months rims leak.

the tire shops here started using it here in guam.. they also said you can save gas too..

I'd like to know some more concrete evidence of this

Just look around its going to be the next big thing atleast for people who do high performance driving. Think, better fuel economy, tires loose air much slower, less corrosion on the rim, tires run cooler last longer. I think it will be huge once people learn more about it.

i know costco here does it. It is better, but not much better for daily driving. The theory behind it is that nitrogen does not expand as much as oxygen does, so the air pressure will stay more constant regardless of tire temperature and will leak out less since it is a bigger element that oxygen. The air you put into your tire right now is a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, i think actually around 80% nitrogen already and other impure elements circulating around the air. If you put nitrogen in, it is more stable and less resistant to temperature changes. Does that mean its dangerous to not use nitrogen? No. Is there an advantage of using nitrogen? Not really, but yes.

nitrogen gas is one of the most inert gases - there's a reason us chemists use it as an inert atmostphere to run reactions under -

so is oxygen...what's your point?

nitrogen is not dangerous, We breath 78% of (N) and 21% of 02, the last 1% is inert gases. So i cant see how its dangerous if your breathing it right now! Like said before (N) and 02 both are not flammable, but with 02 it is a self oxidizing agent and will speed the process of combustion. Man i do learn stuff at work!

Yea i hear that, I had never heard of nitrogen filled tires till a month or so ago and now every new Tire or Trade publication we get has somthing about it.

Um, do you realize that 78% of the air you breath is NITROGEN???!!!

Air contains only 20% Oxygen. The reason many race teams (Indycar, CART, F1) use 100% Nitrogen filled tires is b/c it has a more linear response to temperature change then atmospheric air, so it's volume expands less when hot than atmospheric air.

Now, to answer the question, I don't see any benefit using 100% nitrogen on a street car. Nor could I see paying $5 every time your tire gets a little low. If you are talking about a track car, well now most people go back and forth with tire pressures, and your nitrogen tank back at the shop wont help if they want to add a bit of pressure. Still, it may be a nice quirk to have at the shop and see if people like it, I can't imagine a tank would cost that much.

my mom has it in her WRX tires. shes been doing it for a long time. not only is it NOT dangerous at ALL, and its only marginally more expensive, but there are few advantages. its more of a "this is new and kinda helps and if you want the best, get this!" things. iunno, just my 2 cents.

oxygen is a very electronegative element, only 2nd to fluorine. It's sole purpose in life is wanting to gain more electron density and that is why oxygen is so important in chemical reaction in nature. It is the final electron acceptor in the krebs cycle that governs the reactions of respiration in our body. It is also very important in the process of photosynthesis (actually carbon dioxide is), but nonetheless it is important because it is very reactive as an oxidizing agent. so quit making oxygen a bad guy, without it, we wouldnt be here. Yes oxygen will strip electrons off the rubber of the tire, or oxidize the rubber if left long enough, but that reaction will occur sooo slow that that is not something to worry about. How do you think rust forms? from oxygen oxidizing or stripping the electrons from the metal.
Bottom line, if you can get nitrogen filled air for free, get it, but its not worth paying money for it. Damn, i learn a lot in school.

I don't know up here in MN rims wil lgo from clean to corroded in a few months with air from all the road salt. Oxygen + Aluminum + Sodium = a very simple battery and the wheels show it. The insides look like a bad battery terminal after a few months. If nitrogen can keep this from happening plus give you slightly better milage plus you don't have to check you air as often I think it would be well worth the 5 bucks. My car is a street car that see track use every so often, however not any more. Plus it gets COLD and some mornings you tires lose almost 10psi if you filled them when it is warm out. 10degree difference in temp to 1 psi air loss from your tires.
