Default NEED HELP: I got a fixit ticket in menlo park, ca

ok...
this morning @ ~2:30am i was ticketed in Menlo Park, CA---a suburb of san mateo county.

The ticket was for 1-not having a front license plate, 2-having illegal front lighting (clear corners), 3-having a modified exhaust.

I can easily put on the front license plate and change my clear corners.....
however, my problem is with the exhaust.

INTAKE-the cop saw that i had an AEM intake with thermotec wrap on it...he said that was illegal---i need a carb sticker for this part (i bought it used so maybe it's under the thermowrap). Worse comes to worst, can i just pop on my OEM intake?

HEADER-I have a JDM 4-1 header. He said that i modified it, but i responded with the fact that it's OEM and that there are heatshield bolts right there. ( i dunno if he believed me, the ticket just says modified exhaust) can i get away with this if i put the heat shield back on?

CATBACK EXHAUST- I have a custom 2.5" catback exhaust mated to a CarSounds 2.5" Hi-Flo Cat. The 2.5" catback is crimp-bended. My muffler is a Comptech Streetpro exhaust (i told the cop that i got it at the local acura, he did not believe me). I'm going to acura tomorrow to get the CARB number/sticker thing.

Will the STATE REF smog check me or what? is it just a visual thing? will it get clear if i have the CARB Numbers? I also have a VAFC and TODA B's and a Skunk2 ITM which the cop didn't notice....what will the state ref say? HELLLLP ME PLEASE!!!

also, it says that i have to be in court (WTF FOR?) before April 23, 2002. ONLY THING IS, i am leaving for BOSTON and will be back in may at the earliest!

crapola guys...help me....

if he just put modified exhaust.. and cited you for V.C. 27151 or something like that.. you shouldnt even have to worry about your intake or header unless the ticket states it as a violation.... the front plate you can slap back on.. the lighting you can change... if need be.. the intake you can put your stock back on... if you really need to change it.. does it say on the ticket?

as for the actaul exhaust good luck...

Get the stuff fixed and mail the ticket with the proof of correction and a check for each violation which should be $30.

Just get some amber colored bulbs and put them in. Thats legal for clears. Then contact AEM for the certificate or some other smog place. I think you can get one at a motorsports place maybe. Not sure. If your exhaust is not street legal then you will have to change it back for the inspection or just fork over the cash for the violations.

either way you going to have to work for it.

I got a fix it ticket for my license plate not being installed. Cop was cool about it. didnt even get a ticket for my clears, or how loud my exhaust is. lucky me I guess. If you come off with an attitude at all a cop will find like 10 things wrong with your car to give you a ticket for.
All I did to fix this is put my license plate on and get the ticket signed off and sent out.

the first 2 can be written off by a cop. 1. Lighting, you must put on the stock amber corner lamps unless u find a cop cool enough to just let u go with the amber bulbs. 2. put the front plates back on.

3. for that exhaust, I believe you may have to goto court to prove to them that it is street legal, just bring the paperwork from comptech/acura. FYI there are no CARB #s for exhaust systems since it is AFTER the CAT. Cuz if you go and just pay the fine, you're next modified exhaust ticket will be rediculously high. Can someone back me up on this one from cali?

Intake: Unwrap that thermal wrap. The carb sticker should be there. If so you are clear on that.

Header: Questionable. A quick top-side inspection of the header doesn't qualify as a violation. I wouldn't put the heatshield back on. To them it would seem you are covering the "problem" whether than fixing the problem.

Catback Exhaust: Yes, go to your Acura dealer for some kind of verification and it wouldn't hurt to make a copy of a receipt of purchase as well as a CARB number/sticker.

Clear Corners: It is my understanding that as long as the bulbs flash yellow (amber), the housing shouldn't matter. The question is did the officer as you the activate the blinker to verify an amber light.

ok, classic story of a cop using scare tactics...

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SMOG!!

1. no front plate - fix it
2. illegal lighting - fix it
3. modified exhaust - 95 dB or less is legal. try to get it signed off

get everything fixed except for exhaust, if its not obviously too loud, and get it all signed off.

if cop does not sign off, take to court.

if cop DOES sign off, go to court to pay $10. If clerk doesnt take it, go to judge. Judge will fix it and you pay $10.

You do not have to go to court on that date, but you need to take care of those things by then.

Anymore questions, hit me up on IM.

PEACE!

Forgot to add, no cat is a federal offense, but you have one so no worries.

lights do need to be white or amber in color, BUT the housings need to be reflective of light. This is why all those supposedly DOT legal Altezza's were NOT legal.

As I said before, if the ticket only sites you for modified exhaust, it just needs to be 95dB or less...

Dino....please give us the actual numbers of the offenses you were cited for. This helps with possible fixes...and did you get a sticker that said that it required you to go to the CARB ref? Most likely not, unless he gave you a ticket for the intake...if so go to the station that he is working out of(after you fix the license plate and turn signals), pull the wrapping off far enough so that you can see the CARB sticker, and tell them that you were written a ticket for something that was indeed legal.

Dude, just put your stock muffler on, and go have it signed off... that's what I'm gonna do... it's a hell of a lot easier than trying to fight it... no matter what, you'll have to pay a couple dollars in court costs... If your Acura dealer is cool, he'll prolly let you borrow a muffler section so you can go find a cop...

Yup, i got the sticker on the back of the ticket for the Ref.

On a lighter note, I did get my lights and front plate signed off.
I did call Comptech, and Bob sent me the "legal papers" saying that this exhaust does indeed pass the california "sound tests" (under 95 dB).

I brought these papers along with my car and unremoved exhaust, and the officers (at redwood city CHP and Atherton) were very nice to me----they told me that the only person that could sign this off would be the a judge at Redwood City's Supreme Court, or even a clerk...-----i was 30 minutes late and gotta wait till a weekday to get it signed off....

these papers seem very convincing, and i seriously doubt that a judge or clerk will give me any trouble as to "signing me off"...

Thank you all for your help with this.....this is why i post here.

and Austin, thanks for all the help man....intake hookup and what to do with the comptech stuff....

Good to hear...now you may still have problems if you have a CARB sticker on your ticket and will have to remove the cams, header, intake manifold...but if all you were cited for was a modified exhaust and not the cams...you may be able to prove to the judge that you were cited by an officer that didn't have a clue.

About that clear corner one... i have personal experience with that and thought i might share it. You MUST put on your stock ones.. putting amber lights in clear corners will not do. I asked the cop when he pulled me over and he said exactly that. Also, the clear corner violation is a fine, not a fix it ticket. I had to pay $60 or something around there for it. I stood in front of a judge and everything for just that. I have my ticket all signed off since it did say it was a correctable offense, but the judge told me that the cop was wrong and that I had to pay a fine. Simple as that. Bastard cop.
