Default LS VTEC or DOHC VTEC?

I'm going to be getting a 95 Acura Integra GSR, and he's going to be putting in a DOHC VTEC, or an LS VTEC. Which is a better Motor?

Thanks, Ryan.

first post = SHUTUP

(edit) ok furreals.

you must be confused, because i belive (and please correct me if im wrong) ive never taken the head or even valve cover off my ls, but it is dohc, right?

im gonna go out on a limb and say that your thinking of a GSR motor when you say dohc vtec. because it says dohc on the valve cover. an ls motor can be built fast, but a stock gsr motor is faster than a stock ls motor.

whether you want an ls-v is up to you, and on how its built... personally i dont know muc h about it but ill let someone else chime in

Keep the DOHC VTEC B18C1 engine that is stock in the GSR.

Ohh no ****, you're a mod now dogg?

And if the OP does come back, Try to clear things up for us scpres1.
The "dohc" vtec if it's the stock engine would be a much better choice for you.

The Ls/Vtec is a good engine when built right... You get the bottom end and top end horsepower... But if you have a GSR motor already.. then your good to go.. just have less torque.

sorry sorry sorry, i will admit i was one of you a few years back when i first got my 00 si but i learned just like we all did at one point in time i am still in the process of learning, what kind of head where you thinking about putting on the ls block and witch ls block is it (a or b) never the less i would still go with the gsr motor i have had bad times with ls-v (poormans vtec )

dont listens to the ******** here
LS-Vtec is DOHC Vtec, the choises you have are b18b or b18c. b18b is the ls non-Vtec engine and the b18c1 is the GSR engine. between the two is just personal prefrence there have been many arguments here on which is better but i was allways told by guys i know with 9sec hondas that LS-Vtec is better for power but i dont have any experience with it personally
GSR(b18c1) would be the easiest most strait forward way to go. LS-Vtec is hard and takes alot of time and money to be reliable

Here is a good page to read to understand the process of LS-Vtec
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1676914

hope this help a bit goodluck with your project

a GSR is a DOHC VTEC motor. DOHC stands for dual over head cams and all integras come with it (from what i remember besides some of the japanese ones). LS VTEC means adding a vtec cylinder head to the non vtec b18a/b block. So if you are buying a gsr you dont need to put any other motor in there, the gsr is a great motor for boost or n/a. and if the person selling you the car said hes gonna be putting in a dohc vtec or ls vtec motor in, check to see if its a real gsr or not but checkin the engine code on the block, it should say B18C1. let us know

Alright, I'll let you guys know whats up. I'm getting the car from my Uncle. He owns an Import Car shop, called The Lab in San Bernardino. I would like to run a Turbo. So which whould be better of the two motors? If the LS is just a motor with a VTEC Head on it, the GSR VTEC would be the best route then, right? I eventually would like to do some motor work.

There isn't an engine in it right now. Hes giving me the choice of either a DOHC VTEC, or an LS VTEC.

wow you need to get some more information.

DOHC just means that it has dual overhead cams which every motor that comes stock in USDM integras have. So an ls/vtec is a dohc vtec motor. A gsr is also a dohc vtec motor and so is a b16 and an ITR motor. You need to ask him what the engine code is on the dohc vtec motor.

It should be either:

B16A
B16B
B17A
B18C

And if its a usdm motor it will have a number after that code. If you trust him building an ls/vtec than why not go for it? Do some research while youre at it. Youve got a lot to learn.

other way around hehe, ls motor doesnt have a vtec head, gsr do, and ls/vtec is the ls block with a vtec head

So an LS VTEC would be a good route to go then? And why do you say The Lab sucks?

FIRST THING TO KNOW ABOUT ENGINES
2 main components
1. BLOCK
2. HEAD

Different honda series engines
B series ( b20, b18 , b16)
H series (h22a , h23a)
K series ...
D series...
all of these will fit your car with some work B series is your best bet

Choose a B series engine because Honda is like lego and these parts are interchangable

B18C -GSR = Vtec engine what would originally be in your shell
B18B -LS = The motor in the non vtec car

Think about what you want to do with this car
the GSR engine will cost you much more than the LS motor not only for the engine but for the install as well.

dont look at either of these engines

Go buy a b20z or b20b Try for the z if you can get it.
These are cheaper engines with much more torque , and torque is what you need most.

Not only will this engine give you more torque it can handle boosts much better than the other engines.

Also if you dont go the boost way and you want to go to LS VTEC , B20 VTEC is the next best thing even faster way more torque , way more power , much less cost.

To make B20 VTEC you need the B20 motor and another head Try for GSR head or even b16. Get it built professionally and your laughing.

Goodluck

If you want the most power for your dollar.
Go buy yourself a B20z engine

Have him install the "DOHC VTEC" motor. You live in San Bernardino which is one of the most strict areas in an already strict state. You will not be able to get an LS VTEC motor smogged.

And I doubt you will be able to get a Turbo'd "DOHC VTEC" motor smogged either, unless you use one of the two street legal turbo kits.

My recommendation: You're 15. Have him install the "DOHC VTEC" motor and call it a day. I'm tired of turning on the news and hearing about 15-18 year old kids from LA/SB/SD county getting injured/killed in street racing related accidents.

Good advice. Make sure the block is stamped B18C1.
