Default Integra sounds like WRX sometimes

well i just did a valve adjustment, now i am getting some sort of misfire and it is running on 3 cylinders , it will drive fine then start sputtering and running on 3 cylinders

i put in new spark plugs and noticed oil in cylinder 2, so i took off my valve cover to see if it is leaking but its not

it runs and drives fine, but then it will start bogging and running on 3 cylinders out of nowhere

any help

Check if you have any sparks on all 4 spark plugs first.

alright i will check

but it runs perfect for a couple minutes then starts misfiring and running on 3 cylinders randomly

double check you did the valve adjustment correctly and if you did, do a compression test. Sounds like a bent valve.

valve adjustment is good, no ticking at all..........i just checked if all 4 cylinders are getting spark and they are , i doubt its a bent valve.....

i think oil is getting into the spark plugs somehow, because when i changed my plugs cylinder #2 had oil in it

just drove the car and it sounds like **** all the time now

this problem got progressively worse , it first started as a small sputter now its to the point the car has a rough idle and sounds like a wrx

Sounds like to me somehow a cylinder is getting oil in it causing the spark plug not to fire. Like fouling the plug.

i had this issue with my gsr. the first time it was a bad distributor. the second time it started out running rough, then it ran on 3 cylinders all the time. that time it was a blown piston ring on cylinder 3 i believe. i ran a compression test and it was something like 225-225-30-225. a bit off lol

240k on the engine.........did a compression test yesterday and cylinder 2 has like 40........but i doubt its the rings because it runs good sometimes, and then reverts back to running on 3 cylinders, i think its a distributor issue,

if cylinder 2 has 40 psi compression, that is an issue. it wont just re-build compression in the piston. i would run it a couple of times to make sure you performed the test consistently on all 4 cylinders. just to rule out an accident when doing the test.

are you doing the test at WOT?

if you do the test again and 2 keeps coming back low, drop some oil down in the chamber and repeat the test for cylinder 2. if compression bumps back up, cylinder 2 definitely has an issue.

i would start here since you already have access to a compression tester. which side of the plug was the oil on? if its on the connector side, you prob need new valve cover seals.

in my experience is usually a mixture of both that causes a misfire like that, especially @ 240k miles. the blowby pressure from the cylinder not sealing, gets into the crankcase, and blows out your valve cover seals, which coats the spark plug connectors in oil, and just makes the problem worse.

sounds to me like you prob need at least a good bottom end and/or motor from a junkyard, or a fresh hone and some rings. see what you come up with on the compression test again, and try some new spark plug seals first. use some permatex ultra grey or some hondabond also if they still leak.

i think its the fuel injector because it starts running fine, but then i give it gas and it runs on 3 cylinders again, i also ran the car till gas ran out and this problem started happening

An injector would not make the compression that low.

what was the exact procedure that you used to to set the valve lash? did you replace the valves or just set the lash? sounds like either a bent valve, seats need lapping or you just set the vavle lash way too low and now its not closing all the way. fuel injectors have absolutely nothing to do with engine compression, your fuel system should be disabled while you do the test.

ok its not the fuel injector, its not the valve lash adjustment, its not a bent valve, cylinder #2 is just dead??

Do a leakdown test and that'll tell you exactly why theres pretty much no compression.

if your supposed to do it at WOT, why would you disable the fuel system? makes no sense...

You're suppose to disable the fuel system. You don't want the engine running. You just want the engine to crank over 3-4 times so you can build compression on that cylinder you're working on. Make sense now?

BTW to OP, I would also point to the cylinder 2 as one of your problems. fuel injectors would not cause that wrx sound aka 3 cylinder running. 240k on the engine sounds about the end of that engine lifecycle. Either rebuild it or replace it.

Yea that motor is done. I blew my GSR on the freeway and was able to get it home from cali back to vegas (baker) on 3 cylinders. I drove it easy but we made it. Subaru sounding inline 4 is a blown inline four usually. If its randomly running on 3 cylinders which cylinder isn't firing? The truth is in the compression test. Its done for.
