How do you know when your tranny is dying?
I was hoping you guys could help me out a bit, it seems as though my tranny is closing me out of gears at higher rpms, at low rpms it shifts smoothly for the most part.
Before you guys slam me for not doing a search , I did and couldn't find any solid answers.
Thanks

WHen the gears start grinding, and when it starts to get really hard to put it in first gear, from a stop at idle, or any gear at that. hope that helps

Could that just be the clutch? Or maybe the syncros? Do those symptoms necessarily lead to his tranny being dead?

The clutch could have something to do with it too. On my car, when the tranny was starting to take a crap on me, every gear i slammed, grinded. And i was told by this shop that looked at my nearly blown tranny that some main bearing was really shot, that was causing things to be out of line, and that is why it was hard for me to put it into any geargoing from neutral to first was really hard, i had to muscle it in, and then shifting to second was pretty hard, every gear sucked. so i just bought a new tranny, of a 2000 GSR

Hmmm, check clutch and try bleeding lines? Not certain if any of these would help but with my experience it sounds like it is NOT the tranny. Good luck.

Re: How do you know when your tranny is dying? (Ralpho)
i grind if i shift from 2nd to 3rd at high RPMs. but it goes in just fine when i'm driving like a grandpa.
sometimes i do notice it is tough to put in first gear, but its nothing a little rolling forward, backward or slowly and carefully engaging the clutch can't fix..
i could use a new tranny tho.
man..
my car is in shambles. bad axles, bad tranny, busted windshield..
i love it tho.
those axles are gonna kill me, watch.

if you do buy a new tranny ever, get a B16 trans, ten milllion times bettter then the trans in your car, cuz the gearing is alot shorter.

that happend to me to whenever i slammed third in my teggy it grinded but normal drivin its ok and when ever i tried to put it in first very once in awhile it wouldnt go in, but i would pull it about halfway into secondd and shift up into first with the clutch all the way down and it worked everytime, i would def suggest a new tranny, b16 if possible

Re: How do you know when your tranny is dying? (jinteg730)
Thanks for all the advice. Now why again should I get a b16 tranny? how much will it run me? Are there any modifications that need to be done in order for it to work?
Another thing is, the guy who sold me the car said it needed a clutch. I'd hate to drop in a new clutch to find out the tranny is dying anyway. Is there anyway to tell if its the clutch and not the tranny? When the clutch was going on my Civic Si (1990) it shifted smoothly it just didn't grab very well and it was sluggish going uphill even in low gears. When I blew the tranny on my LS it was locking me out until one day it wouldn't let me back in at all. I've never owned a VTEC integra so I've had very little experience with GSR trannys, anything you guys can think of to help me or point me in the right direction would be great. Thanks again.

It is a good possibility that the clutch is going and not the tranny, however if you neglect to replace the clutch, then a tranny replacement may also be required as the worn clutch will contribute to additional synchro wear. Personally I would take the tranny to a reputable shop and have them tear it down and inspect it.
Regarding the B16 tranny, it has closer gear ratios and can greatly improve engine response and acceleration without much of an adverse effect on gas milage when you don't feel like driving like a psycho.

Re: How do you know when your tranny is dying? (Kendall)
you can generally find used B16 trannys for a very low price. Ive seen B16 trannys for really cheap, like 4-5 hundred dollars. just gotta look around. Also there is no modifications needed to make it work with your car. It should just bolt right up, perfectly. If you happen to need a new tranny, get the B16 tranny, if you cant find one, get a GSR trannywhich is also a direct bolt on and has shorter gearing than your tranny, but the B16 tranny has shorter gearing than the GSR tranny, i wouldnt waste your money trying to fix and rebuild your tranny. And im sure there is some sort of performance shop around you that you go to, they could help you find a B16 tranny or GSR tranny.

Well... I dont think there is any signs that your trannies is about to go. It can go anytime. But you can tell if your syncle is bad of not from when your shifting you can't get into gears or when you get into gear it grids into gear...

I just wanted to be clear that I had an LS but currently I have a 4dr GSR, and will that make a difference since it weighs more than a coupe?

what do you mean? How would weight make a difference in the trannys? Anyways, a hydraulic b-series transmission will fit onto any other b-series engine, for the most part.

Re: How do you know when your tranny is dying? (garados)
well since there wasn't ever a B16 motor or tranny inside a 94 and up integra, I was thinking that the overall weight of the car would have adverse affects on the life of a B16 tranny. I don't know if its true or not, thats why I asked. Anyone that could shed some more light on the subject I'd greatly appreciate it.

youll be fine, the possible extra 100 pounds will not do anything but slow you down. No adverse effects are gonna happen...

Re: How do you know when your tranny is dying? (Ralpho)
it might be obvious, but when was the last time you changed the transmission fluid?
my car kept on popping out of 3 and 5th and was getting hard to get into gear and when i deceided to check the fluid (last changed 5 years ago), there was less an an ounce in the case. it was making a whining noise, but it's fine and shifts buttery now.
honda trannies are supposed to be indestributable if you treat them right.

my tranny had no 5th and no reverse. I put I flushed my tranny fluid and got 5th back but no reverse. if I don't down shift out of 5th to 4th to 3rd I can't get 2nd or 1st. I think my **** is really F'd up.
