Help - Change my timing belt? How?
Hey guys.. First off I'd like to introduce myself. My name is John, and I live in Atlanta. I have a 2001 Acura Integra Ls. I bought it used, then later checked the background to find that it's not the best. Really sucks. One thing that is odd about it is this: in the manual where there's a table where youc an fill out the maintence history, ect. It had a oil change in '97. How did that happen? Secondly, I bought the car with different bumpers on it (yeah.. i didn't know). It came with a DOHC VTech sticker on the back bumper when it's an Ls. Don't ask, I don't know. ANyway, I have had a few problems with the car already having to spend quite a bit of cash to fix. Oh yeah, one more thing: It's a lame *** automatic. I purchased the auto because it had really, really low mileage for its year, ect. However, It was used by more than the person who I purcahsed from. IT's been kind of like a nightmare with it. I really like it, but there's stuff wrong with it and it makes me not appreciate it anymore.
My goal is to try and learn more about my car (because i don't know anything and I just recently changed the oil myself) and perhaps fix the problems and be proud. However, I'm lost in the woods when I pop the hood of the car.
My 01 has like 72.7 k miles ( yeah I drive a lot) and I have a couple things still wrong with it. THe most annoying problem with the car is that... sometimes when I slow down (not going fast.. kind of like 5 or 10 mph or so) coming up to a turn and yield to traffic, then when it's clear, I start to accelerate faster; however, the car is like.. jults or jumps or like.. feels like it went over a big bump and the car doesn't start off in a lower gear for the acceleration. IT'll soemtimes like start off in 3rd gear (i can tell by the performance and it's my car) when it should start off in like 2nd for better pick up. The thing like.. just starts off in a lower gear when it shouldn't and then my car is slower than hell till I get going, again. It's really strange and it sucks. I haven't had some maintence done. I know I should take it to Honda or Acura and have it serviced, but I wanna do some of it myself. Any suggestions guys? Thanks!!
Myc.

Yeah.. I'll continue to do my google searches. I'm finding a lot of results with purchasing the timing belts and other random stuff about a '01 integra. The pictures of a guy with an Ls that tells how to change it.. is it on this board?

Also, since you stated that you want to learn how to work on your car, I'd suggest investing in a repair manual. A Haynes or Chilton's (or both) is inexpensive yet still very helpful and useful, and you can pick one up at your local Pep Boys. A Helm manual is even more comprehensive and an excellent resource, but also more expensive a sometimes a bit harder to find.

Aiite. I'll purchase one of those books, probably will have to sooner or later anywho. So does anyone else know what I'm talking about when I said that my car - when going 5 or 10 mph - jumps or jults and goes into a higher gear and not a lower gear, thus giving me poor acceleration? It's an automatic. It happens when I slow down - to 5 or so mpg - then i press on the gas pedal to pull out of the neighborhood - or wherever - and the car like.. jumps or somethign.. then it's really slow being in the higher gear when it should be in a lower one. Timing belt problem? THanks!!

I believe Certified Acura dealers change the belts at 60k to be safe, but the timing belt is most likely not the culprit for your jarring transmission.

The jerking that you're feeling when you decelerate, then accelerate could be one of 2 things:
-transmission issues
-engine mount
Rule out the engine mount before troubleshooting the transmission:GOOD LUCK!!!

Why in the hell would they do it at 60K when the maintenance schedule clearly states 90K miles. If a dealer tried to change my belt 30K miles early I would have to say F 'em.

Like everyone else said, it sounds like a transmission problem. Take your car to a shop that can flush your auto transmission out. This might help with the shifting problem.

Thank you guys!!! I'll definitely to the guys at Acura to check out my tranny fluid to either drain it or whatever and for them to browse through the parts of my tranny. ^.^
