Default Guys with ITR or ITR styled header: I just made my own skid plate! Pics n stuff..

Duplicated one my bro in law had.

I made it out of 1/8", beings this is/was the prototype. I wanted to check the placement of the holes to make sure it was good. I need to make one slight adjustment, but as you can see, it fits fine.

I'll try to make one out of 3/16" metal this afternoon or tomorrow if I don't have the time today. I imagine thats going to be rather hard to get the bend, but we'll see. I want to do it out of 1/4" but I don't think thats gonna happen.

If I can make em out of 3/16, I may make a couple extra and see if they'll sell

Questions, comments?

If anything, I'd stick with the thinner gauge material. I know plenty of people run skid plates such as these, but I have mixed feelings regarding them. Protecting the header is obviously a worthwhile goal, but when you install a robust plate and then the header suffers an impact, essentially the full force is transferred to the head itself. It would probably take a very strong impact to cause any real damage to the head, but I'd rather risk denting the header than damaging the head (though ideally I'd run a header that offered more ground clearance/performance). Either way, your fabrication looks very nice.

I'm kinda torn on it too man... I know exactly whatcha mean.

And as a matter of fact, I have a cracked primary on my header. Where the tube welds to the flange that bolts to the head, there is a hairline crack :S

But I'll get that fixed this week, so it's no big deal.
-----------------------------------------------------------

I finished bending the 3/16" one.. And it was as hard as I figured it would be.

BUT... I did figure out a different technique to bending it that won't be as hard... We'll see how it works out on the 1/4" tomorrow.

In the meantime.. Here's the 3/16" one in line with the original and the 1/8".

man I think getting all the broke off header studs out is going to be a bitch. The skid plate is so hard that the head is going to take all the force. Head=expensive, header=easily replaceable

I think, while this is a great alternative to damaging a nice header, that the most benefit would come from a complete engine under-tray for the nose of the car. Not only would it aid with smoother airflow under the car, but impact forces can be shared by the frame and its' mounting points.

+1 for the idea though, I am considering one of these. I'm looking at a Mugen manifold right now, and God knows I don't want to scratch that baby.

DIY: JDM ITR Header skid plate install

Tools needed:
An ITR header
My swanky ITR header skid plate
(4) 12 mm bolts 1" long
12 MM wratchet
12 mm wrench
Jack and Jackstands
About 20 minutes (if you take your sweet time)

Step 1: Locate your car and lift the hood.. get ready to do a lil work.

Step 2: Gather tools/materials.

Step 3: Very Important!! Securely lift the car and suspend it with jackstands. Safety first. Jack at the appropriate lifting points.

Step 4: Grab your tools and skidplate and head under the car. Hopefully you won't see this I've needed one for a long time

Step 5: Get your skid plate ready to bolt up. It'll fit like so.

Step 6: Finger tight the bolts into the top holes. Kinda tricky since the fans are in the way, but if I can do it, you can too!

Step 7: Finger tight the bolts that go in the bottom of the skid plate. You'll end up with this.

Notice the nice gap here.. A cushion so the metal will give/bend before it touches the header!

Step 8: Using your 12 mm wrench, tighten the 2 bolts by the radiator/fans, then using the wratchet and 12 mm socket, tighten the remaning bolts.
Top bolts ( I only installed one, sinced I was gonna be taking it right back off)

What it looks like when your done!

A view from the front.

Keep in mind, my car is rather low, yours might not sit as low.. But, what can ya do? Raise your car up and screw up the sexy lowered look?

Step 9: Lower your car and have peace of mind your header is safer!

So what's the disadvantage to having the skid plate?

I can't think of one. I was just getting the impression someone was implying that there was a downside.

If you hit something / bottom out hard enough, the transferred force onto the studs in the head could break them or strip out the head. That would be an extreme case where you're rallying or just don't care, though.

Wouldn't the same thing happen if you bang the header on the ground?

Not exactly, since much of the force is being absorbed by the header tubing as it bends/crushes. Sort of like crumple zones in cars.

I just can't see the difference being all that great. So it seems like a find product to me.

My brother has one on his ITR header and it's been on the car (slammed) for about 5 years or so since the previous owner bought it. We've not had any difficulties.

If the header is being crushed, it is clearly absorbing a lot of the energy of an impact, though just how much difference there would be is impossible to judge without proper testing.

I wasn't bashing the product itself, just bringing to light a potential issue with the overall concept. Some may feel that protecting the header is worth the possible risk of transferring more of a damaging impact to the head. Others may be willing to sacrifice the header, or are running a header that affords more ground clearance.

Personally, if my car was so low that I was constantly scrapping a skid plate that was essentially attached to my engine's head, I'd look for a different solution.

I concur, I would look for a header with better ground clearance.
