there is a new gm synchromesh which is a GL-4 tranny lube and full synthetic.
GM Part # 12346190
Chrysler Part #4637579
a.k.a. Castrol Syntorq LT 75W-85.
it costs $20/qt. at either dealership, but it can be had for $11.50/qt. at gmpartsdirect.com
its used in the dodge viper transmission.</TD></TR></TABLE>
really eh? Pat, did you hear about this? hmm... looks like I've got an experiment at hand
Seriously... GM Synchromesh with friction modifier fawkin rulez especially on my tranny with the LSD. Besides.. this topic about GM Synchromesh has been covered MANY TIMES and there are people on this thread who would agree with me also.

That's not that much different (viscosity!) vs. a 10w-40 engine oil.

there have been lots of threads on whether gm synchromesh actually hurts your transmission. I have read in a few places that say not to use it ebcause it does not allow your synchros to work properly and this makes them wear much faster. You get a smoother shift but a shorter lifespan. Honda MTF does not have any additives in it that any other oil would have. Its nothing special really, jsut Honda recomends it because they make it. I use Redline personallt but I have used lots of diff oils in there. I was jsut using red 75w90 before in all my cars. With the new teg though, i wanted to try Redline.
Also you want thick fluids. Unlike an engine, the transmission does not get as hot and it uses the oil primarily for a friction reducer and lubricant rahter than cooling. You want a thicker fluid to lubricate more thoroughly.

Go to bobistheoilguy.com and look at his tests with additives for gear oil. The Lucas frothed something awful (= poor lubrication).

Don't forget though that the synchros NEED friction to function properly. Do NOT use Mobil1 synthetic motor oil in a transmission, it is MUCH too slick and will make the gears more likely to grind since there won't be enough friction for the synchros to match the speeds on the different shafts before the gears engage.
And about the Synchromesh, how could it shorten synchro lifespan if people who have had problems with tranny grinding have put it in and reported that the grinding problems went away? Sounds to me like it's helping.

Patrick, or anyone who uses SynchroMesh... Could you read the fine print for me??
Saab has superseeded their tranny oil with some magical expensive stuff called MTF0063. With all this talk about SynchroMesh, I just wondered... Does the GM Synchromesh have that number anywhere on the label? If so, it sounds like a cheaper, alternative that's easier to find.

There's no filter, screen, or anything like that. Jsut a drain plug & fill plug. Each plug has a crush washer just like the engine drain bolt (different size). I've re-used them a couple times, but not forever.

Are you talking about the fine print on the front label of the bottle in the pic that was posted in here? That's just general safety stuff about it can cause eye irritation, etc.
Below the name of the product it says "Semi-synthetic" and "Friction Modified"

Re: GSR Transmission Fluid
I would be VERY surprised if the Honda and Acura fluids were different. I'm pretty certain they're the same.
As to the yellow stuff, I have no idea.
haha dang this thread is old. In my posts above I had only been using Synchromesh Friction Modified for about a year at that point. Now I've been using it for almost 8 years, no problems at all. In fact my ORIGINAL transmission has 300K miles on it and still shift flawlessly with GM SM FM fluid.

Re: GSR Transmission Fluid
Yeah there have been mixed reports on that. I have heard that it's discontinued, but many people report that their local GM dealers still have it available. I bought the last 6 quarts at the dealer where my friend used to work some years ago, for about $50. Still have 3 1/2 quarts left to use.

Re: GSR Transmission Fluid
Pretty sure any Dexron III ATF from a reputable manufacturer will work fine. Power steering is really the only fluid that NEEDS to be from Honda, or from another manufacturer but made specifically for Honda/Acura.

Re: GSR Transmission Fluid
Use BG syncromesh. Best stuff out there. I work at Honda and most of the techs use 10w-30 but its cause its easier than a pump, but I wouldn't recommend it
