GM pennzoil synchromesh confusion updated 2006-4-28
so i went to autozone and saw some pennzoil synchromesh they were 6 dollars a qt. somewhere on this forum, i have read that pennzoil makes GM's synchromesh. so i am assuming both the pennzoil and the GM one is the same thing? i went to the GM dealership also and when i mentioned "synchromesh" the pats dude automatically assumed i was looking for the synthetic one for honda's. he said it was 27 dollars a qt, but do not stock it. he said that he has GM synchromesh non-synthetic one in stock, which is the more common version of "synchromesh" used in their GM cars. so the confusion is, do i get any "synchromesh", or does it have to the the synthetic one. if i need to get the synthetic one, where can i found the pennzoil synthetic synchromesh? thank you!!
updated: i also saw some mobil 1 synchromesh at autozone. any words on these?

People use the friction modified version to temporarily cure ailing synchronizers. If you have no grinds, use the cheap stuff.

Re: GM pennzoil synchromesh confusion (95 integra)
I went to the Gm dealership once to buy this and The guy had no idea what i was talking about. He said I needed a part number.
So I went to Honda and got MTF and have never looked back.
Just my 2 cents.

Tranny got notchy after I started using the pennzoil stuff....which it was not before. I suppose I shouldn't have used it unless my tranny was in the trashcan anyway, but from now on, its OEM honda MTF and if the tranny grinds its time for new syncros.

Re: GM pennzoil synchromesh confusion (tekstyle)
I run the GM synchromesh, good stuff I paid about $48 for 4 quarters and just told the parts guy I need some "synchromesh". I doubt its the synthetic stuff.....
I have heard the Penzoil stuff is the same stuff and only heard goos things about it until I read what 95 integra said above.

Re: GM pennzoil synchromesh confusion (skunked)
Run the Penzoil sh*t you bought. It's the same sh*t. My GSR was running on that stuff for 2 years with smooth as silk shifts everytime.

I heard the same about the syncromesh until i actually ran it.....ofcourse the car did have ~115k on it, so it could've just been its time to start getting notchy. If the tranny is already in the gutter then it makes no difference so try out the syncromesh and if its not then why even "test" the syncromesh if the honda MTF is working? Atleast thats my new thoughts on it.

I'm pretty sure both types of synchromesh fluid are a synthetic blend. There is no "one is synthetic and the other isn't", it's just that the friction modified version has various friction additives. I know the friction modified stuff says synthetic blend on the bottle. I have some at the house but I'm not there so I'll try to remember to post the part number later. Lucky for me I have a buddy in the service department at the biggest Chevy dealer in the area and he gets me 3 quarts of Friction Modified for like $20
As for using it, I'll never use anything else in my car. I've been using it for close to 75K miles now, changing it about every 25K miles or so, and the tranny always shifts like butter, even when it's below freezing outside. BTW I'm still on the original tranny with 229K miles on it.
