Emission system cleaner - dealer rip off or needed service
I was at the dealer getting my oil changed. The service writer called me in and said they were recomending an "emission system cleaning" be done as preventive maintence. I spoke to the tech about it. He removed a brass colored screw that ended in a rounded blunt tip from the throttle body. On the end was a dark coating. He said, "I would do it if it was my car", explainging that it removed varnish and carbon from the tb, intake 02 sensor, valves injectors etc and even cleaned out the the cat. He said it takes about 30 min. The service writer said it takes more than 2 hours and costs - $220! The display the writer pointed out was from Justice bros. The display shows the 3 products used, one for the gas tank, one for the oil and one for the air intake - http://www.justicebrothers.com/index.htm.
The car is a 98 gsr, basicly stock, with only 40 thou. miles. I use textron every 10 miles, and use brand name preium gas - Mobil, Exxon mostly, and change the oil and filter every 4,000 miles.
I SMELL rip off. I'll call ACURA see what they say. What do you think?
Thanks

Not needed.
you can use seafoam and achieve similar results.
Why fix it if it aint broke?

Rip off. Its the stealership, what do you expect.
Just get a bottle of Chevron Fuel System cleaner for like $6 at your local part store. That thing helps clean out the whole fuel tank, including injectors, intake valves, etc., Really good stuff. I talk to some mechanics around my house and that is what they use for their cars too. Plus, the product is from Chevron so you know it's going to good stuff. You might want to replace you air filter if that hasn't been done.
If you are really ****, buy a can of "Throttle body" cleaner. Remove the air box, have a friend step on the gas pedal to open the throttle body and LIBERALLY spray
the cleaner in there. Reattach the air box and start it up.
At 40k miles, you don't need a Emission system cleaning. I can understand 100k miles but not 40k.
