Damn timing belt..
A week or two ago I decided to check and see what kind of condition my timing belt was in. My 90 DA has about 245k on it and I thought it couldn't possibly be the stock timing belt. I looked at it and it said in faded yellow letters HONDA and the timing belt was flapping back and forth like a flag in the wind.
I bought a new belt immediatley and mean to replace it the same day. Didn't happen. Then the weather had dropped dramatically to freezing for a while. Then today I got off of work at 5:40 PM. It is pretty nice out today too. I was a mile from my house and I said to myself "I am going to change that stupid *** timing belt tonight before it snaps on me." Then the ****** snapped. A mile from my house too!?!?! What the ****?!?!? I popped the hood and it is all curled up on one side of the engine.
A few people I kinda know drove by and saw me and just yelled something dumb out the window (bunch of ********). Then one of my real friends stopped by (also a Honda enthusiast). He took me home. Right now I am just waiting for my parents to come home and my dad is going to use his truck to tow me home. I am so pissed. I hope the valves didn't hit the pistons. If they did, I guess I am getting my B20Z sooner than I thought. I will keep you guys posted.

Re: Damn timing belt.. (King_j)
I couldn't hear anything over my stereo. I might have heard something. It was in 5th gear at 55mph. RPMs were like almost 3k.
I have been trying to get that damn pulley bolt off. Impact isn't working. I might have to get that tool that holds the crank still. I am thinking about just getting a new engine instead of messing with that damn bolt anymore, lol.
How can I tell if something is broken with out being able to start the car?

pull of the valve cover off and inspect or pull the head off and really inspect.

anything that looks damaged.. bent up from valves pushed up.. these are the only things i know.. there are probaly more.. also after u put the belt on.. u can run it at idle without the covers and all on it if u dont rev it up just to make sure everything is good.. btw.. same thing happened to me just recently
i was idleing at a light tho and the valves didnt hit or anything

Re: Damn timing belt.. (radzer0)
I just pulled the valve cover and didn't see any thing that looked damaged. It's sitting in my garage right now with everything off. Just need to get that pulley bolt off. Probably going to try and get a tool for it tommorrow. I don't see how the valves could have hit anything anyway. When there is no belt on the cam gears, the valves are all closed. I wasn't stepping on it or anything either. Just snapped when I was cruising at about 55mph.
This sucks because I tried to replace it a while ago and I ended up just retorquing the head (because of that article in Honda Tuning a while back) and giving it a tune-up.

With the valve cover off you will not see anything that looks broken, what you need to do is grab each rocker arm and if any have a lot of clearance, by a lot I mean more then 0.020 then you have bent valves and will need to pull the head. When the belt broke the cams stop spinning and the crank doesn't so some of the valves stay open and the pistons come up and hit them, they are not all closed.

How do I move the rocker arm? Up and Down? Or just any direction? A few seem to move around but, those are the ones that the cam lobes are not pushing on.

Re: (FlaN.)
can u tell if ur timing belt needs replacing by just hearing the engine? my engine has a sorta clicking kinda noise or something ...im pretty new to the scene and is taking off the valve cover a easy job?

Re: Damn timing belt.. (Spoonin)
You move the rocker arms up and down, you will not be able to tell if the ones that are on the cam lobes are bent, just the ones that are not in contact with the cam. To check the ones that are in contact with the cam, turn the crank so that all of the pistons are down a little bit and then turn the cams and check each rocker arm when it is not touching the cam.
JH4DC4. You will not hear any noise from the timing belt unless it is very loose and is slapping the timing cover, not a clicking noise, that might be the rockers, they may need to be adjusted. To take the valve cover off is an easy job but I recommend that you take the car to someone who knows how to adjust the valves.

Re: Damn timing belt.. (..::91TEG-G2::..)
I can't get the damn crank pulley off. I can't get ahold of my cousin to get the tool I need(he has been a mechanic for 30 years, and has just about any tool you can think of). He is moving to Florida either today or tomorrow so I guess I can forget about that one. Tomorrow I am going to either an Acura or a Honda dealership and get that damn crankshaft pulley tool.
This is my last hope since soaking it in Liquid Wrench and periodically hitting it with the impact isn't working. It just turns the engine over. I guess the valves are o.k. since the engine turns over smoothly!

You don't have to drain the oil, but you do have to drain the coolant and disconnect the radiator hoses. The oil is usually sitting in the bottom of the oil pan by the time you get ready to take the head off. Just take off the cam cover, the damn timing belt, cam caps, cams, distributor, then the head bolts, you also may have to unplug a bunch of **** from the intake manifold if you don't want to take the manifold off of the head. Just remember to replace the head gasket when you are done, don't mix up the cam caps and bolts, remember to torque everything back to spec. and all that good stuff.

Re: Damn timing belt.. (2Gen91Teg)
Damn. Well, I don't know what to do. I am kinda hoping that the engine is blown so I can get a new one. But, if it is blown I am going to be without a car for a while. I NEED my car. Luckily my girl drives a 92 Integra, so I won't be without a DA .

Re: Damn timing belt.. (Spoonin)
I`m an idiot. I got the tool from Summit that is made by Moroso for taking off crank pulleys on hondas. Great tool! The only thing is, I never worked with a tensioner like the ones on Hondas. To make a long story short, I tensioned the belt wrong. It flaps like a motha (not like the old one though). When it is at idle the car kinda runs rough then I rev it it seems fine. I guess it idles rough because of the belt being soo loose. I`m an idiot. Gonna fix it tommorrow night. Just figured I would follow up on this thread. Thanks for your posts everyone!

Re: Damn timing belt.. (random-strike)
I just retightened the belt. I can't seem toget it to get completely tight. It's tighter than it was before, but it has like 1/4" to 1/2" of deflection on the long side of the belt. Does anybody know what it is supposed to be like?

Re: Damn timing belt.. (Spoonin)
I think at least 4 valves are always open no matter where engine is in its roatation. So if you turn the crank w/o the timing belt turning the camshafts, the pistons will eventually touch some of the valves that are open. If you're turning the crankshaft w/o the timing belt on the cams, and the crank spins freely, then you definitly have some bent valves because the pistons previously hit them and bent them up out of the way.

Re: Damn timing belt.. (dohc VTEC eaaater)
The car is running like ***. At low RPMs it doesn't have anything. Then when I hit 4k it's like I hit VTEC or something. I think what happened was when I was putting the belt on the exhaust cam kept turning and it was off by one tooth. I figured, oh well, that is like retarding the exhaust cam, but I think it is advanced. Everything else is where it should be. At least it is driveable. I just drove it to Burger King and back. I will just leave it like this until I can buy my other engine in a few weeks.
