Default Clutch ('00 GS-R)

This is going to be long, but I would really appreciate input.

A couple thousand miles ago, I was noticing that the my clutch would engage at different points along the pedal travel. The majority of the time it would engage normally, but every so often, it would engage really low to the floor. BUT it would only engage slightly, and would only really grab hold at the normal engagement point. It felt almost as if the clutch had floated its way towards the flywheel, and so it would touch really early but not really engage until it was supposed to.

Very odd behavior. I had the master cylinder replaced, no luck. Had the slave replaced, no luck. Finally, had the clutch replaced, and it seemed to take care of the problem.

UNTIL about a couple weeks into the new clutch, I was driving around, and it suddenly became ultra soft at engagement. After I kept driving it around a while (because my mechanic told me sometimes the clutch just needs to seat), it seemed to get better. But it's been about 2500 miles, and here's what it does.

Sometimes, it'll engage nice and clean like, just like it used to. But then other times, it'll feel really soft when engaging. Once I've let off the pedal, it transmits power just fine, but I don't feel that 'kick' or 'pop' that you usually feel when the clutch first catches the flywheel.

Any ideas? Stock OEM clutch, master cylinder, and slave cylinder, all less than 3500 miles. My car is at 49k. Thanks much.

I'd like to know, too. Mine has been doing the same thing, except I've blown up two clutches in the last month. It may be time for a trans. rebuild for me. Did you get a chance to inspect the input shaft when the trans was off, or did the place that changed your clutch inspect it? The end of my input shaft (where it joins the pilot bearing) is looking pretty worn. Good luck!

No, I didn't get to see anything except the old parts (clutch plate, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throw-out bearing, and clutch housing). I don't know how to do this sort of stuff myself, and I don't have time to have them hold my car all torn apart until I can see everything myself.

Let me know if you learn/find anything, thanks.

my 01 gsr does the same thing but i know it isnt a clutch problem it would have to be a slave cylnder/clutch master problem ... or air in the line a bad clutch couldnt cause this problem ...... my car has almost 42K on it ...

what kinda clutch do u have now? which one did u have b4? Sometimes the old clutch might seem harder to press down, and the newer one might me softer, due to the pressure plate?

This happened to mine, I had a stage 2 exedy racing clutch (harder pressure plate), and replace it with a stock oem exedy clutch and it seemed to be very very soft? I tried bleeding the clutch line, thinking there's air in the line, but it still very soft. Talking to a buddy, he had the same problem, so I beleive its the pressure plate

IT could be ur flywheel too? gotta tear it apart and check again

Make sure they replaced or resufaced your flywheel when they did your clutch

Yeah, they resurfaced the flywheel.

Right now, I have a stock OEM clutch and components. As for the old one, here's where it's a little weird. I bought the car used (2000 model, bought in fall of 2003 at 36k, driven about 14k since then) and when I finally decided to replace my clutch, the mechanic (who very much seems a trustworthy and honest guy) told me that there was a fair amount of burning on the flywheel, and there are some burn marks on the pressure plate.

The weird part is that he said that the old clutch plate was actually a bit smaller than the stock OEM clutch he used to replace it. This COULD indicate that the guy who owned it before me had an aftermarket clutch on it.

But the thing is, that nice clean engagement... I felt it for the first few hundred miles on the new clutch. And even now, I still feel it sometimes. Sometimes it has that pop, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't been able to detect any sort of pattern it goes by. It's hit and miss when it's cold, when it's hot, on high RPMs, on low RPMs, whenever. The pedal effort feels the same all the time, and as it was before I got the new clutch.

Any thoughts? Again, thanks for the input you've given so far.

did they adjust the cable?
maybe have a bad throw out bearing, or the entire pressure plate assembly is bad
