Whats with angleing the muffler anyways? I've never understood it. It makes it looks like the installer is cutting corners.

Yeah really... and the more straight it is out the back, the more its propelling you directly forward... ~0.085467 more free HP.

The angling on most N1-style exhausts is for looks. For a true system that requires it, look at something like the RS*R GTII. Minimal bends (or should I say bend?) with that system because it exits straight off the cat and has only one bend to shoot the muffler towards the bumper cutout. The piping looks like this basically: _______________/
This is why these types of exhausts are angled.

I understand them angeling them ourwards. But the ones which are angled upwards and slightly right just don't seem right.

They're that way for a reason. The JUN Prelude uses this kind of system. I don't know if it still does, but it used to anyway. It HAS to be angled upwards because the B-pipe hangs a little low for undercarriage clearance. The muffler is thus angled up in order to sit properly under the bumper.
I used to be a fan of these exhausts, but now I just like them simple, straight, and oval.

well some people angle their exhaust because the stock one isnt straight. civic and integra is straight, but like the DA and crx got like that little turn. so they just make it so there is minial bend. on my old miata they had to angle it also cuz no room
