buy a new tranny? or fix the old one?
Hey guys,
I finally got my GSR running good, all the maintainance up to date. But, while i was changing my cluch out, i figured i would go ahead and swap out the tranny fluid with redline syn. It first started leaking, then it was acting like the synchros went out. Well.. come to find out I accidently left this plug loose on the side of the transmission (looking for the fill-plug) number 13.
I soon found out that redline is a no-no so i went ahead and swaped it out with honda MTF, and when i tightened that plug i mentioned earlier, the transmission case cracked all around it and a couple pieces broke off. I've tried epoxy several times and it still leaks. But its only that little bit that gets into where the plug is after i drive.
My question is, would it be worth the hassle to spend $300 for a new tranny case on a transmission with 100k miles? or is this transmission junk because of low fluid- and better off to get a new one?

there's a few things you could do, but they all involve taking the tranny out.
1.) Weld up the case, and hope the internals aren't too jacked.
2.) Get a new tranny case, and hope the internals aren't too jacked.
3.) Get another tranny in better condition.
4.) Weld the case, or get a new one, and rebuild the internals.
Personally, I would use the opportunity to learn how to rebuild a tranny. But that's your call. The easiest solution with minimal hassle would be to just get another tranny in good condition. Personally, I would feel iffy about running those internals after running them on low fluid like that. But, I also don't know how long you ran it like that.

right.. and thats my delima, because its been the only thing i could drive the past few months but now i'll finally be able to give her some down time. Its only been about 2k miles and its a slow leak, like i said only a certain amount after i drive the car.
I don't think i'll be able to weld because some of the pices are mising, and i feel sketchy about welding on cast aluminum. Sounds like a new case+LSD

buy a used complete tranny and rebuilt it.. u will be much more satisfied than fixing yours and u will get better results than buying a new one.
