Default brake problems...i am at a loss...

The front driver caliper on my 99 gsr is hanging up. I have replaced the caliper, brake line, fluid, and cleaned and greased everything, and it still sticks. I was told if it was a problem with the master, the rear opposite corner would also be acting up, and it's not. I don't know what else to try. Can anyone give me suggestions? I am stumped and frusterated. Thanks.

Check your rotor to make sure it isn't out of round. Perhaps have it turned. I am having a similar problem on my 1989 LS.

Does it only happen when braking, or does it happen just cruising down the highway? When your car is parked, is there play in the wheel?

When jacked up, the wheel turns harder than the rest. The wheel itself is tight. The shimmy is from the caliper clamping down on the rotor. Feels like a warped rotor would. But when it is not hung up, it feels normal and smooth. Happens when I am just driving, not braking.

Ill start to feel it in the wheel at Highway speed. Then if I hit the brakes the damm steering wheel feels like its gonna jump right off the car. IT SHAKES REAL BAD. Every thing in the front end is tight no wheel bearing or ball joint play Im stumped also.

I hear ya. Same ****. I called 2 acura dealers and a local brake mechanic. They all said to change the caliper, which I did. They are all stumped. I got a new caliper ordered which I will put on later this week. They said there is a small chance I got a bad one. I'll let you know if it works. Someone has to know what's going on.

first check to make sure that your caliper bracket is not bent in any way. driving with it hung up probably over heated the rotors and they are now bad, possibly causing the fluid to go bad and also burning up the caliper again.

if i was working on it, i would first have to look over everything, and note anything damaged and what need to be replaced.

you also might have some kind of dirt in the lines. you might have to flush the entire system, but be careful of the ABS system when flushing the system.

whats the condition of the fluid?

I checked and a mechanic checked to see if it was all straight and it is. I drained most the fluid down and added new stuff hoping to get the most of the old stuff out. When i drained it, it was medium to light brown in color, and free of any particles. What is stumping me is that sometimes the brakes work perfect, and the next day they are shitty. Also, when it is shaking, 5 minutes later it feels like nothing is wrong. Most of the stuff that can go bad is fixed, and the pads and rotor still are within spec.

If the fluid was bad or had stuff in it, wouldn't all the brakes be acting up? I thought it might be that, but all the other brakes are fine.

well, there could be some dirt or something in the hard line going to that one caliper. not very likely though. but since youv'e check most of the other things, its hard to say without actually seeing it in person and experiencing the problem.

i would try jacking the bad wheel off the ground (by the lower control arm, so the the weight of the car is still on the suspension), and take the wheel off. Then spin the wheel, and check to see if its spining smooth. If it does, try pumping the brake to see if you can get it to act up. if you can get it to hang up, then you might be able to diagnose the problem. make sure you tighten a lug nut or 2 on the rotor so its tight on the hub. see what you can come up with.

You know, the rotor can be warped when hot and normal when cool.

...Did you try cleaning out the Caliper Guide Pin holes and lubing them with Silglyde??..

Just throwing in some other options. Wheel bearing, tire not balanced, or bent wheel.

try replacing the brake hardware. $5 in parts so it can't hurt.

If you are still on stock pads, I would just get brand new pads AND rotors ($75 for everything from AutoZone) and see what happens. It should fix any problems, but if not then it's definitely not a brake problem.

I just put all new pads and rotors on mine. I did grease the slide bolts. I just got the front tires rebalanced. Its so wierd somtimes its fine. Then It will act up on the highway then just go away. Also I have no play in the front at all. Still stumped

I also did the sliders. My rotors are straight. The pads are within spec. Thanks for the suggestions, but I really think the problem lies somewhere else. I guess gsrboi80 and myself are SOL. It is the caliper clamping down on the rotor. Plain and simple. What is stumping me is that the caliper, line, and fluid are all new. What else can go wrong to make the caliper clamp up like that???
