i was aware that all honda/acura engines are zero tolerence/interference type. i havent heard of one not being interference.

anyway a built ITR would be bad ***. gonna cost ya but you gotta pay to play and it'll be worth it in the end

If you are going to "build" an itr you might as well just get a gsr block and a B16 head and save yourself about 2k before you even get started.

I agree, I still regret selling my GSR, I have an LS now after 5 years and love it, so I would stick with it and do a build!!!

I'm actually not too sure. The tensioner bearing went out but I don't see how it would snap that quick! The belt had a crack every inch.

I've heard GSR heads are better to build than B16 heads. Of course, there's arguments for both sides so I really don't know..lol.

In the end, I'm real happy I didn't get rid of my car. I'll drive it until it gives out! 500k miles?

I hoped it was just at bad coil or ignitor, but after taking off the valve cover to inspect the situation, I discovered a snapped timing belt. How????? I'm thinking something seized...who knows.

Well, what's done is done. Now what? Stock ITR rebuild? 200whp N/A rebuild? Turbo??

Hmm...many options...don't know what I should do. I'll be looking for a new car, tomorrow, that's for sure.

Oh well, there has to be ups with the downs i guess. I ironically got a job offer with NEC right after pushing the car into my driveway, so I hope this is just a sign that a new future is ahead of me. Hmm...new car, new president, new job which is the start of my career...crazy day for sure.

Yeah, this was pretty much a post to rant off. Haven't posted in a long time. Share your thoughts on rebuilding.

GSR heads may be better, but I am saying that if you want to do a "type R" build, the cheapest way would be to use a gsr block (it has the same dimensions as a type R block) and a B16 head (since it most closely resembles the type R head...they both share the same casting), rather than pay 3k plus for a type R longblock! Good luck either way!

Wow...that's very unfortunate. Yeah, only thing that keeps me going in bad times is my health - that I'm truly grateful for. Good luck to you man. I hope your 09 turns around. I believe for every bad there is good, so good should come to you (I had a very bad 07).

Oh, for sure. If I were to do a ITR build...it would definitely be with my block and head with just different internals.

I would be very interested to know a couple things bout your engine mishap:

was the timing belt dealer equipment or aftermarket? who made it?

did you replace the tensioner when you replaced the belt? and if so was it dealer or aftermarket part?

Thats weird that the belt would be that honked up after 40k.

I am due for a timing belt in my 92 civic DX and I am debating how far I should go:
should I replace the tensioner and the water pump too?
should I pay through the nose for dealer parts or are autozone parts just as good?

the car is just a daily driver, unmodified, so I am not inclined to spend a lot on it.

i'm hooked on OE honda belts or high end ones like greddy. some of the joe blow belts don't really fit right and have stories like the above posted. also the GSR/type R is 100% an interference design. if you have one of the two sets of pistons up you will contact if you spin the cams. i actually tried this last night just for fun. btw you always spin the cam to test this stuff, this piston has more weight behind it and you do not want ANY force on the valve.

Yeah I probably should buck for the OE belt.

In my experience, at least 80-90% of small japanese 4 cylinders are interference (possibly excluding larger truck engines), with Honda/Acura its closer to 100%.

I bought the whole timing belt kit from this forum (I'm almost completely sure, but not 100%). They were sold as OEM, which were the manufactures that made the parts for Honda. From now on, I'm buying nothing but Honda labeled parts for the tensioner and belt. I wish I read stories like mine before. It could also very well be just bad luck that it happened and the parts were fine.

If it's your daily driver, don't cheap out, get the Honda. I did my pump with my belt, it may not need changing, but it's worth the piece of mind. If I would have used Honda belts and such in hind sight, it would have been only 1-200 bucks more, rather than upwards of almost 2k. Of course, money was tight for me back then, and a rebuild was due down the road anyways (was told 2 cylinders had valve leaks - bent 2 valves, changed 4).

I'm soon going to change the bottom end bearings out for the rebuild of the block, but I'm gonna wait until I save extra money to get better pistons and other internals for a complete build up.

Yeah parts cost from Honda for tensioner, pump, and belt will run me about 2 bills
but I am going to do the whole shebang to save me chance of future headache.
