Default ac killing my idle

when i turn on my ac the idel goes to crap
when the ac is on it will bring the idle to about 400rpm or lower and the car shakes like crazy. it sometimes even stalls the car. i tryed to adjust the idle so that its higher. i set the idel so that its about 1,000 rpm thinking that this will bring the idel up when the ac is on. but when i turon the ac the same thing happens. when the ac is on the idel drops really low.

what is the cause of this problem and how can i fix it.

i dont *think* there is a way to fix this unless your alternator is crapping out which would drop the voltage and make your car struggle or get a stronger alternator...i ahve this problem too but it doesnt drop that low. My idle will drop a little then bounce back up...its kinda like when u turn on your lights and the idle drops and bounces back up...only thing i can really suggest is tighten up the throttle cable and raise your idle...HTH and hope u get this fixed!

There is a circuit that is supposed to compensate for the drag of the A/C do you have the helms for your car? Or the ETM for your car?
They should have flow charts for diagnosing that problem.
My '91 LS almost stalls when I turn the A/C on as well, but the idle does come up a few seconds after that.

Idle air control valve? This is what is used to raise the idle when the A/C kicks on...

check your belt and the tension, try to adjust it a lil bit, see if it makes a difference, if not id check ur idle control valve.

I have to re-check my helms. I always thought it was the ELD.
The Electric Load Detector, that raised the idle when some electric device
was used. IE the sunroof , rear defogger, headlights, A/C.

i have the same problem, except my car just shakes a little then but doesnt stall.

when you turn on the a/c do you have it on when the car first cuts on? b/c it seems to work a little better when i let the car warm up a little, then cut it on.

The ECM uses that to hold the idle steady when the AC clutch engages. Also when the alternator loads up with fans, wipers, 800w amplifiers, etc...
