97 Gsr Sounds Like a "Subaru"......?
As the title states my car sounds like a "Subaru".
Im tinking that the timing belt skiped a touth or two.
I miss shifted from 3rd into 2nd at about 8k rpms and saw the tach rev pass 9k and i shut of the engine...I did not hear any pop, cling, clink noises when this happened. Also i saw a pretyy big cloud of smoke behind me. After this i pulled over and inspected the car. It ran like a subie. I drove it home a good 10 miles not reving pass 3k rpms. All that time it would sound like a subbie and the engine does not seem to have any weird/abnormal sounds coming from it. It also idles pretyy roughly like it goes up and down. The check Engine light came on and it would be solid for a little while then it would blink for like 20 sec then solid again. I will start up the car tommorow after changing the oil with some new oil and see if it makes any noises while its cold then proceed to changing or adjusting the timing belt......Now i need help on what to do...?
Im not a noob when it comes to working on my teggy.
And please guys dont give me the "Gett a guy ho knows what hes doing attitude" thing.
Thanks
Did a compresion test before taking the head of....#1-210 psi #2-205 psi #3 0psi #4 200psi.
WHY DID I GET A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON...?
Ok took the head off the block today and here are some of the pics.... Looks like the exaust valves on cyll 3 took a beeating because they are a lil open.
Here are some pics of the head.
What would you guys recomend me doing
Gett new Valves

first of all just cuz your burning crazy oil and always adding oil, that does not mean you dont need to change oil and just add a quart or two every time. PUT FRESH SYNTHETIC AND DONT ABUZE YOUR BABY.
Second of all your car does have a knock noise plus sounds like a subaru. start it cold but before you do, have someone look if you get a big puff of smoke on the cold start. Then let us know what you hear and we'll go from there.

Towards helping him... if the timing belt turns out to still be lined up right, it sounds to me like bent valves. Since a compression test is quick and easy, do that first. If the results aren't good, do a leakdown test and you'll know for sure.

Re: 97 Gsr Sounds Like a "Subaru"......?
I started up the car when it was cold and it sounds like Valves are hiting the piston because there is a cliking noise from the valvecover once i putt up my ear to it
Time for a head rebuild maybe even the hole engine......? Car burnes oil before the stuff that hapened.....Like wen u smash it theres a plume of oil and beetween shifts theres a nice big cloud of burned oil coming out my exhaust.....?
I need more inside on what to do.
I know i have to take the head of.
Rebuild it or get it rebuilt by a shop
Have it resurfaced
Putt it back on with a new timing belt....and so on..?
Shuld i at the same time change my piston compresion rings or oil rings.....? So that it wont burn oil..?
HOW DO YOU DO A LEAK DOWN TEST? Ive done a compresion test on it before and the numbers were 195 195 200 195 if i remember corectly...?

Re: 97 Gsr Sounds Like a "Subaru"......?
To do a leakdown test, you need a leakdown tester (more expensive than a compression tester) and an air compressor capable of putting out like 100 psi. A quick search will give you step by step instructions.
Burning oil could be from worn rings, but it could also be from bad valve guide seals.

After you hit 3rd just let off and say you won. No need to keep smashing all the way to 4th gear.

Re: 97 Gsr Sounds Like a "Subaru"......?
bent or broken valve.usually the reason for this suburu sound. if you do a leak down/compression test itll tell you which cylinder. pull the head and check the damages. and then id suggest a rebuild. if the motor has has never been rebuilt. its probably time.
