Icon3 5th gear grinds everytime. please help

Hey guys, I have a 94 integra ls and recently started having problems with 5th gear grinding. So I changed the trans fluid for starters with Hondas MTF . It didnt change anything.

I keep hearing that GMs Syncromesh (friction Modified) fluid works wonders. Im very skeptical of a gm product in a foreign vehicle and how it could help....

1.What do you think is the problem? I did some digging and saw that it might be the collar or the sycnros might be messed up?
2.What should i do?
2.Has anyone used GM Syncromesh for a very long time?
3.If this syncromesh fluid doesnt work, what would be the next step?

I have been using GM Synchromesh Friction Modified (Pennzoil Synchromesh is NOT the same) in my GSR since around 160K miles, and the transmission is now just shy of 300K miles, all original internals. I change it every 25K-50K miles. It's great stuff. But I hear the new formulation of Honda MTF is good, too, and may switch to that when my current stash of SM FM runs out.

The question is, how did you last fill the transmission? Did you fill it with the car level, and fill until the fluid runs out of the fill hole on the side (end) of the trans case? If you filled until it ran out the filler hole, but the front end of the car was raised up in the air, then your transmission is low on fluid, by as much as 1/2 a quart. The car MUST be level for you to get the proper amount into the transmission, if you're going by when it runs out of the filler hole. If the fluid is low, you'll typically start to get a grind in 5th gear as 5th doesn't get lubricated as well when the fluid level is low.

I usually fill through the VSS hole, but I still remove the fill plug and wait for it to run out. You can measure out the exact 2.3 quarts (or whatever it is for LS transmissions) and fill it that way, whether the car is raised up or level, but I'm always paranoid about being overfilled using that method. So I always put my car on 4 jackstands, remove the fill plug, remove the VSS, and fill through the VSS until it runs out the filler hole.

So first thing's first is for you to check the fluid level. The car needs to be level, and you need to remove the transmission fill plug. This can be done on a lift in a shop, or you'll need 4 jack stands. Then see if the fluid is all the way up to the bottom of the fill plug hole. If it's not, you need to add fluid, and hopefully that will cure your 5th grind.

What you heard is indeed correct. The fluid works wonders on minor issues, but in the end it is only a temporary fix to what could be a real problem.

There are tons of people who run this fluid on this forum with zero issues. Try searching, a lot of information.

Also next step if this doesn't help would be to take it to a transmission speciality shop.

Best bet is to pull the trans and either 1 get a replacment with a ls or better a gsr trans. or replace the 5th gear sycro and gear its self. but pretty much your syncro and gear seam done. also have the shift fork inspected for bends or damage before you replace the syncro and gear.

Yes I have done everything to the t to make sure that i filled it properly. I also used the VSS hole on top of the trany instead of the one on the side to fill. I also make sure the car is level. Hmm interesting.. Youve used GMs syncromesh fluid for a while and looks like its done well for you. I guess ill try that first before taking extreme measures. Thanks
