Default 1988 Integra AC Problems

Hi

My ac is blowing warm in the teggy.
I had a leak in one of my o rings which i replaced and recharged the system.
It took one 14oz can and read 40psi from that one can?
The fan turns and the compressor engages but the thing still blows semi cold air.
I notice when i turn the temp slider fully across to red the blowers dont even deliver warm air???###??? it just stasys the same temp

Could this be a sticking expansion valve?
if so how do i get to it to replace it?

thanks for your input

There is air trapped in the system. Take it to a shop with an a/c service machine to have it serviced. They will check for leaks, purge the air and moisture trapped in the system. A 14oz can isn't enough freon. If I recall it should take around 20oz. but no more than 2 cans freon total.

i'm low on cash at the moment, how can i purge the air out of the system?

i thought maybe i could give the expansion valve a crack with a hammer and it might work ?!

is it located behind the glove box?

A bad expansion valve wouldn't cause the heater problem. Sounds like the heater control valve may be partially open, so even when the a/c is on, some hot air is being introduced into the vents. My buddy's accord had a similar problem. Pop open the hood and manually open and close the heater control valve and make sure it is completely shutting and opening. Verify that when you have the climate control lever to the blue(cold) setting the heater control valve is fully closed, then move the climate control lever to the red(hot) setting and see if the heater control valve fully opens.

Make sure there is resistance on the Temp. Slider. when I got my 87 the cable was broken off, it is only held on by a little piece of plastic. If there is resistance the cable runs down by the drivers side footwell as you look at the heater box. look there and make sure the cable is moving.

Hope this helps

If you used one of those DIY A/C recharge kits, [sounds like it] you are out of luck with any A/C shop, your system is now contaminated with HCs, [hydrocarbons] and no A/C shop will do anything more then "identify" the system, [check what is in the system] the identifier will indicate HCs and the shop will tell you they can do nothing for you.

I agree with ruffrhyder, there is air in the system, with air comes moisture, both very bad for A/C.

There is only one way to properly recharge an A/C system, leaks must be repaired, a nitrogen pressure test will confirm repairs, the system needs to be put on a vacuum pump for at least 45min. to insure all moisture is boiled off, [and air is removed] a proper charge of refrigerant, [R134a in your case] can then be "installed", [I also agree it is closer to 20oz then 14oz] a 6oz undercharge by itself would result in very poor cooling

I also agree with ruffrhyder that you need to check the heater control valve, they are a common problem on Honda/Acura, we replace more then a few of them every year. 94

Edit... Sorry just realized it was an 88 not a 98, the refrigerant is R12, [not R134a], R12 is no longer available so a DIY kit is about the only way to go, try to find one that does not contain sealers.
The proper way would be to do a "retrofit" and change the system to a R134a system.

yep the temp control was not working -
i pulled the cable manually and shut the valve on the engine side of the fire wall and the ac blows cold now.
the guage is reading 45 psi in the green,
i believe this is the correct amount of r134 in an r12 system?
or could i boost a little more in there to make it a little colder?

Thanks everyone for the input

You are using R134a?
What brand of recharge kit did you use?

Was the R12 system retrofitted to R134a, if so how was it done?

The R134a charge into a retrofitted R12 system will be about 90% of the original R12 charge.

What is the air temp. at the vents, A/C on full, blower on full?

45PSI on the low side is high, especially if that is with the A/C running, with that said, a single gauge on the low side, [vapour] line is a poor indication of how the A/C system is working, only a proper set of A/C gauges can tell you what the pressures are.

With the above said, if the A/C is working now, don't try and fix it anymore. 94
