I am posting this for a friend.

He has an Integra GSR. The motor recently got rebuilt (about 6-7k miles ago) by a well known guy in the area. It's basically a stock GSR with I/H/E and a CTR intake cam and ITR pistons. (stock GSR valvetrain)

Tonight, he wound out 3rd gear and somehow shifted into 2nd instead of 4th. The RPMS shot up to ~11k RPMS. ouch

I am following closely behind him and just see a HUGE cloud of white smoke from behind him. His motor immediately dies so we pull over on the side of the road. No oil/coolant leaking whatsoever. Went back and checked the road where it happened.. No debris or anything.

After a couple of minutes he tries cranking it and it won't start. Just a couple puffs of white smoke from the exhaust. When you smell the motor it smells sweet like burning coolant. Just towed it home, and we haven't done anything yet. I'm just posting this up to see what it could possibly be before the motor comes apart.

Could be a lot of things but I would say not to try to start it. Take it apart and hopefully it's only a headgasket blown, but also could be something serious like blown pistons and/or bent/burnt valves. Let us know.

BTW, tell your friend to rev limit his ECU to 9500RPM max on any application in an Integra-IMHO

Alright thanks. But even with a 9500 rev limiter it wouldn't do much when misshifting into 2nd.

Also would running a compression check be a good idea? Could it cause more damage by turning the crank?

Take the head off and just look for anything out of place. That really just sounds like a head gasket to me. If you do a compression check it's not really gonna do much except maybe show you which cylinder the problem is closest to. Either way the head is comin off.

Don't try to crank it. Pull your spark plugs first. Look down in there and see if there's any obvious damage you can see right away. You're doing more and more damage each time you do. You're going to have to pull the head. Plain and simple. Sounds like you either blew the head gasket (good case scenario) or put a rod into your coolant jacket. Sorry chief.

two of my buddies had similar things the head lifted off the block and coolent poured into the cylinders cracking the sleves

Alright I just got back from my friends house.

We pulled the spark plugs and looked down into cylinder #1. Not looking good. Piston #1 looks [freak]ed. Metal shavings are embedded into it.

Went to take out spark plug in cylinder #2 and it was really tight coming out. Finally got it out and the spark plug was smashed all the way down to the threads. Looks like the piston came up and slapped the spark plug, crushing it.

Cylinder 3 & 4 have metal shaving on top of the pistons as well.

All the spark plugs were drenched in oil.

Pulled the valve cover and it was milky and full of coolant/oil. Both exhaust valves on cylinder #2 look dropped..


Most likely gonna pull the head tomorrow or sometime soon and see what's up.

wow! after only 6-7k too . Teach your friend how to drive before he gets it rebuilt again...

Ahh the Money Shift.. I did this twice in the first week of getting my gsr, NO problems whatsoever.. Im so lucky!!

good lord... poor GSR... I'm still breaking in my rebuild and it has taught me a lot about how the car should be drove (i.e. in the range of 3k) and has forced me to drive differently (no ripping into vtec) I think its going to help me to not rip on the motor too much once i finally can

and hopefully wont make a mistake like that

Pulled the head today, all 4 valves in cylinder #4 dropped

Causing this: (That big metal "ball" used to be a piston)

Let us all take a moment of silence for this unfortunate disaster...... moment done. That's pretty freakishly brutal. Even the cylinder wall fell apart! I've never seen that ever before in my life.

did you just keep your foot on the gas after you over revved it..lol this is probabally the lowest hp car ive seen crack a sleeve like that.

lol, It wasn't me. It was my friend.

But no he didn't keep his foot on the gas, he just mis-shifted and over reved. Usually all you see is bent or dropped valves from over-reving. I don't know how the hell he cracked the whole sleeve/cylinder wall though.

He is out about 2g's. He is getting a new GSR long block built for $1300, prob gonna need a new clutch & pressure plate.

he must've had some serious detonation going on to crack a sleeve like that on basically a stock gsr.

Well hopefully when he rebuilds his engine he will treat it right. Looks like it's time for a new block and head work....sigh; no offense but he deserved it for not having a rev limiter.

He had a rev limiter. A rev limiter won't do **** when mis-shifting from 3-2.

Definitely, a rev limiter will not save you from a mis shift like that. It' funny how people believe a rev limiter will prevent damage from a mis shift from 3-2 or 4-3.

Sorry to hear what happened man. Luckily I got away with some loose valves when a friend of mine mis shifted from 4-3.

Rev limits don't apply to downshifting, only to acceleration

Eh 11k...not good, tear it down and inspect it, that's the only way you'll know whats broken.

Me and my friends have done the Money Shift about 6 times between the three of us.... None of us have ever had any problems. of course that was right when we first got our cars, we dont make that mistake again! I cant believe how many of you have [freak]ed up your cars from doing it... Wow we are lucky!
