Default Starting problems occurring AGAIN in my 92 DX auto hatch

92 DX automatic

Symptoms:
When starting the car, it cranks fine, but once it finishes cranking, it stumbles very hard when turning over, almost as if its only running on 2 or 3 cylinders. You can feel the motor shaking, struggling to stay running, and then sloooowly seems to smooth out and get up to normal idle speed and then runs fine from then on. There are NO problems when the car is driving. No smoke, no hesitation. It runs like a champ at 90mph down the highway.

When it happens:
It seems to be a problem only after the car sits for awhile, like over the weekend for a day or two. But its occassionally starting to happen when it just sits overnight, as if the problem is getting worse. Thats the same thing that happened before, it go progressively worse, and eventually wouldnt start at all.

Now this SAME problem happend to me last year, but I NEVER found out what the problem was. I ended up breaking a spark plug in the head when trying to check the plugs, and had to remove the head to get it out. I replaced the head gasket, all belts, plugs, cap/rotor, checked ignitor, checked main relay, battery, fuel filter, checked fuel pump screen, oil levels, rebuilt it, and it started right up. So I dont know what the problem was. It has like 20K miles on it since the last time this happend. Im definitely leaning towards something in ignition system, or maybe fuel system, as it just doesnt seem to want to fire up when starting. But once it fires and runs for a bit, it runs great.

I havent had a chance to check everything out yet, but I will by this weekend. If anyone has any idea, let me know. It definitely seems like a mechanical problem rather than a problem with a sensor or something like that. Previously I had another car so it wasnt a huge deal, but I dont have another car anymore and I need to stop this before Im screwed. With winter coming, I know the problems will be amplified by the cold as well.

hmm thats pretty odd. I would check everything over. Also run a compression test if you think it might be mechanical problem.

Other then that just check everything again, mainly fuel stuff (pump, filter, etc).

HTH

Might as well not have posted.... jeesus. If you didn't notice, he said this stuff only happens on startup. The things you mentioned would adversely affect the car all the time.

Chek every single vacuum hose for leaks, tears and disconnects, especially at the MAP sensor and throttle body. These are the same kinds of symptoms my buddy had when he found three torn lines =p.

I wish I could help...

Have you checked the exhaust sensors to make sure they are clean and in working order?

Ill check all the hoses, thanks.

Rob, if it was a sensor, wouldnt this have been acting up all along? I never touched a single sensor last time around, and after I rebuilt it, it started up fine ever since until this past week. Also, if it was a sensor, I would probably be getting a CEL, which Im not.
