CRX 2nd gen Mugen Wing installation help
I have a VIS CF mugen rear wing. I thought I was supposed to get mounting hardware from VIS, but they tell me that it uses 3M Heavy Duty double sided tape? I hope this is not the way I have to mount it. Did mugen only give 3M double stick tape with this wing when it was sold? I can imagine how many of these wings were lost by falling off the back of several CRXs. Anyone know how this wing is supposed to be mounted?

real mugen comes with different brackets than pictured. but you get the idea. you can use double sided tape or epoxy to supplement the attachment.

I agree with "supplementing" the brackets with double sided tape, BUT, using it as your MAIN way of installing the wing? No way. VIS keeps telling me that's all I need and I keep fearing it's going to fly off my car.

um **** that...thats not safe at all...

The 3m stuff is supposed to be able to hold 2lbs ( I figure 1.5 lbs ). Also, if I use two squares of the tape might it hold up to 4 lbs? I wish someone has tried this already or has mounted this wing already. I have done many searches here and on Google, but no luck whatsoever.

while im sure this CF piece is extremely light, its not so much the weight of the spoiler that is the problem, i think the drag alone which will literally pull on any back surface area due to the low pressure would be of concern, not to mention using the edge of the spoiler to push the hatch down, which i often/always did, but never had an attachment issue.
just figure out how to make the brackets yourself and how to secure it to the spoiler. the general shape of the bracket looks like this. (probably not going to come out right, disregard the dots.) spoiler side to the left, attach to the side of the hatch on the right flat portion.

Yeah, I emailed VIS and this is what they replied:
"That carbon fiber spoiler should have some holes already predrilled. You
also have to use 3M double sided tape. The hardware is not included. What
you need to do line the entire spoiler with double sided tape and then where
the holes are, drill it and that should be it. Thats how we installed it ."
So I will have to use the two holes that are on the length of the wing and drill through my hatch so they fit in the holes then use the 3M tape. Just for other "ricers" out there I will post a "how to" so others can see how to install this when buying the VIS wing.

Supposedly with a really long drillbit I can drill through the hatch glass? The holes are actually not on the glass. They're on the rounded metal part before it gets to the vertical glass on the car. The only thing I think I won't be able to figure out is whether or not to use screws or something else to go in the holes and hold the wing in. Maybe the screws will create their own thread in the carbon fiber? I'll find out, but first things first. this weekend (if Ivan doesn't hit first) I get it painted to match the car. Then I will try to install the wing.
well, the good thing ive always thought of the mugen wing is that if you decide to remove it, provided any adhesive you used (to supplement the attachment) comes off cleanly, it doesnt leave any holes visible from the outside. i still think you should create some kind of bracket.
Just about the only thing I can think of right now, from those pics, is that the wing clips onto the black plastic sides (the ones that hold the vertical glass on the hatch on) and then you use double stick tape to support that...but on my car, I can't see a way of getting under the black plastic strips. Other than that I can't get how it mounts onto the car.
youre still missing the brackets that wrap around the sides. trust me. my friend has the real mugen wing too. its basically the same except his brackets are much nicer.

That would be me. Tyson is correct, you're missing the hatch side brackets. They are shaped like that ASCII drawing and similar to the Wings West pic farther up this thread. They basically pull on those wing side brackets and there are set screws, on the hatch side, to adjust the tension. These screws don't penetrate the hatch however.
There is another screw that holds the hatch side brackets to the hatch, you need to screw/drill it into the hatch. This gets hidden when you close the hatch. These are oriented perpendicular to the side of the car.
Let me see if I can scan the original install .doc and snap a pic of my car tomorrow.
And yes the Mugen wing was also supplied with tape that spanned the width. It is a supplement, since there really is nothing else to support it in the middle/brakelight area.

Nice. Well I tried "fitting" my CF Mugen wing to my CRX today. It's not perfect (it's also not foam), but it fits and still looks nice. I can't get it to be perfectly flush, but I am satisfied with the aftermarket fit. Afterall, it is aftermarket in CF. I am sure that I could have a bodyshop cut and shave at the wing so that it contours better with the car, but that's more money than I think I should spend on it. I am already getting the top part painted BMW 325i Midnight Blue so I think that alone is enough. I'm not a big fan of the CF look unless it's subtle.
XrcR6 for the info. Thanks

Well it is CF, but a shop can make it look show perfect for you. I think all I would have to do is use a sander maybe to sand down some of the cf and make it contour to my hatch. After doing that, then it would be show perfect. I will find out more details tomorrow after work. I am stopping by the local "ricer bodyshop" to see what advice they have after pricing the paintjob of my wing.
Ok, starting to change my mind about painting the wing. I really haet how long it's taking to get this thing painted and my last paintshop experience wasn't good at all either so I might just leave it carbon fiber and mount the wing this weekend. It all depends on how things go tomorrow after work and if they even call me back ( I left a voicemail on their machine because when I showed up, no one was there and everything was locked.
