Default [FAQ] [DIY] How To De-Rice Your Honda (50 pics 56k Has A Wait)

So you bought/are looking at a riced out honda?

Fear not Timmy, there is light at the end of the tunnel, infact you just made a great choice in buying or thinking

about buying that funny looking piece of machinery. If you havent bought it yet, buying a riced out car means that
the current owner most likely has no idea what he had done to it or swaped, with that said you can very easily talk

him down in price because that after-market body kit or sticker does not increase its value.
Even better, if you can find an easily fixable problem with the car, exploit it to the degree that they will take off

from the price.

After a few hours of shopping, we were able to find this 96 Honda Civic EX; fully riced, fully broken? lets take a

look:

Front Shot:

Rear Shot:

Inside Shot:

Not only has it been tastelessly modified, but it this car has become victim to the dreaded IS Bearing taking a hike,

I picked this car up as is and with stock parts for just less than 2500.
Now Timmy, lets learn how to de-rice your Honda.

Step One; Exterior
-Removal Of Wing
-Removal of Stickers
-Removal of Headlights
-Removal of Body Kit

The first and easiest thing to take off is this grossly overweight and under-functional spoiler mounted all over the

rear.

That looks a whole lot better but please dont look down

left side

right side

O_O! EI! Who put this thing on? they arent suposed to drill 12 holes on each side, a new trunk lid from Honda, and

some spot weilds when we hit paint will fix that.

Moving on we have these giant white stripes, looks kind of like someone had too much fun next to your car.
Using a heat gun, carefully heat up the section you are going to work on, if you can park the car in the sun as well

thats even better.

Carefully peal off the tape as you work further along with the heat gun. Use a razer blade to helpt you start,

becareful not to cut into the paint.
Also becareful when pulling, the vynil should just stretch off,if it feels hard to pull heat it up more! You might

tear your clear coat with it!

Working from pannel to pannel, stop and examine how much better your car is looking.

Keep going using the same proccess, if the vynil has been on the car a while, it may look like this when done:

Using some Oops out and a clean dry cloth rub the remaining outline residue off the car, again working from pannel to

pannel. Oops is strong stuff and will remove your clear coat if you rub too hard or let it sit too long. When its

done, you should have a slightly hazed markings where the residue was. Using some scratch Out or similar product like

Meguires Step 1, clean the pannels up, wash and dry.
Stand Back and look, that red was crying to get out from under those white stickers.

Excellent, now lets look at those headlights. If you want your car to stand out, there so many different alternatives

to headlights than these ones that look like knock off integra lights. Possibly the ugliest thing I have seen (by the

way this set is for sale).

You will most likly have to remove the front bumper, but if you have an offset screwdriver and adjustable wrench, you

can do it by pulling back the fender liner and bumper sides. Start by unbolting the top, and on the inside of the

bumper you will find a remaining screw close to the fender. The process was about 39283x times easier because of the

poorly made front bumper on this car.

Now grab your crappy stockers/better looking headlight, and proceed to put them on, I baked mine using one of the

many guides available on H-T (search).

Before

Apart

After

Now if you have very hazy headlights, there is a great guide on how to make them look a 1000x times better. I on the

other hand, used a slightly more intensive version of it when I went to paint.

-Get 2000, 2500 or 3000 grit wet sandpaper
-Poor water and a small amount of car soap into a bucket
-Let the sandpaper get saturated in the water.
-Sand in straight line motions over the whole the clear headlight piece, this should take you about 30-45 minutes

depending on how hazy the lights are.
-Wrinse those lights off
-with a dry cloth I applied 3M Rubbing Compound. followed by 3M Polishing Compound, followed by Meguier's Plastix,

the result was night and day.

Mounting the stock headlights is the reverse process of removing the old ones (duh)!

From here, I decided to leave this aerogear front bumper on in favor of getting a stock bumper and painting that. The

more pressing matter was fixing this IS Bearing in the transmision.

A few phone calls to robear racing (www.robearracing.com) and we have some parts on the way to the door.

Its like christmas. ^_^

Along with rebuilding the damaged transmision, now is the perfect opertunity to do any other modifications, like

putting on a 12lbs flywheel, HDD Pressure Plate, Organic Street Disc, Civic Type R Shift Boot, and Skunk2 Short

Shifter and ****.
Aslo look into making your car kiss the ground more, because ultimatly you want to go faster, better get a good

suspension to make that work. Koni Yellows, Ground Conrtol Coil Overs w/ Eibach springs, and Skunk2 Upper Conrol

Arms.

Your rice rocket is ready for paint. What was covered so far has been easy-to-do work, if you dont know body work,

its suggested to find a reputable shop. This car entailed getting a new trunk lid, welding the body holes shut, a new

front bumper and grill.

Final photos should be something like this:

Congradulations! You have sucessfully de-riced your car and transformed it into a car with future potential. Normally

the story would end here, but it didnt for me...

Part 2 - The Accident

I had ordered a CTR front lip that took a day longer to dry in paint.
I would have photos of this, but no more than 2 weeks out of paint a 17 year old girl decides its appropriate to take

a RIGHT hand turn into my drivers side at an intersection. I was driving in the right lane, her in the left, yeah it

doesn't make sense.

Back to the body shop I went, and after threatening to sue the insurance company for violation of statue, I was able

to get my car fixed how I wanted to. After speaking with the body shop, I was able to mount this list.

-OEM Honda Door
-OEM Honda Fender
-OEM Honda Japan EK Thin Side Moldings (thanks http://www.jhpusa.com)
-OEM Honda Japa Integra Type-R Red Recaros (dont know how I scored these, but I got her to pay for it)
-16" Rota Circut 8 Wheels (she bent one wheel, scored a whole new set)
-Toyo Proxies tires
-Professional Paint Job Curtisy of Mike O'Brian (1st Place Nation wide by Dupont for best paint job on classic cars)

Now lets see those goodies she payed for.

Looked so good, I had to take it out for a photoshoot when I got to work.

Then my camera died, Sorry H-T you'll have to sit tight for the next set of photos. Thanks for reading my guide to

de-ricing a car, as well as the story of my vehicle.
Hopefully this will serve as a helpful tip for people looking to take off a typical mod, but arnt sure how.

It set me back a little more than a month due to finding the parts and the type of labor these guys do.

Unfortunatly the longest part was when I broke my wrist, that set me back 8 weeks on getting the transmission done, I was able to do the exterior work though. I signed the title with a bicept cast

My fiance's father is a lawyer, he was able to exploit my current situation as well as pointing out a state statue they were violating. They basically told the shop to fix it my way.

Thanks everyone for all the comments so far, its really just a fun car to drive now that its all done.

One awesome car man. BEAUTIFUL transformation. Take the car back to the previous owner and show him how it's SUPPOSED to look like.
