I was wondering if anyone knew what is needed to do a RHD conversion for a EG? Also how its done? I searched for the proper tread, but didnt come across anythingon how to. Any info would help, thanx

 

u need a JDM EG front clip. and a good *** welder.

 

well... I just bought a COMPLETE 1994 JDM RHD SiR. I drove it home actually. I did some research.... Its gonna cost a LOT OF CASH to register it. So I just wanted to convert everything to a USDM shell. Is it possible without making holes or drilling?

you want to convert a usdm to right hand drive without drilling or cutting holes??? Your would have to get the whole pedal assembly mounted on the right side (including your master for your clutch and brake). I dont have any clue what would be involved to swap the steering over... **** dude, swap the vins... lol

 

hehe... yea... I called... CHP... they said... to just cut it in half and put it back together. As long as I have all the proper paper work. Everything should be koo.

 

what are you cutting in half? Are you talking about physcially cutting the front off of one and welding it onto the other>?

 

Yes... but done the dealer way... As a HONDA dealer would do it. Not really cut per say... but welded in all the rite spots

 

Might as well just register the EG6 with all the money you are going to spend cutting and welding. I would trust a solid frame than I would a welded (in the middle) frame.

i too would like to know....i wouldnt want a hacked up RHD car...just pay the extra to register that dope car

 

thats such a waste.. cut a rhd shell in half to weld onto your us hatch.. **** go buy a front clip withno engine for 500$ and use that. dont destroy a perfectly good car...

 

just sell your car u have now and try to register the rhd.

i would def look into a vin swap. I am currently doing a cab swap on my rock crawler its a 82' toyota 4x4 and im just swapping the vin plates to the new cab. You can just swap all the vin #'s to the RHD car. Even better is to cut out the #'s one from the firewall under the hood and do some minor body/paint work and tack weld it on the RHD. with the old chassis just hack it up and take it to the dump. Thats a common thing we do with the Toyotas we get free that we need just for certain frame parts. Easier said than done. Let us know what you plan to do...

Swapping VINs is very illegal, do it only if you don't mind the possiblity of losing the car.

Thats illegal - however thats prolly the best way to do it. Get a crappy car of the same color and swap all the vins.

The only other way is to cut and weld.

Okay... here is the run down... CHP told me that ALOT of RHD cars in the US are registerd, but illegaly! They also told me, if they cought a person with a illegaly registerd car. They would not only take it away but put a big fine to get it out. As for registering the RHD SiR. It would cost $6-8K for it to go threw the proper safety inspections. They told me its not worth it, unles I have a $40K car or more (SKYLINE). Plus you have to put up that money up front. And even if your car doesnt pass the inspection... You will LOSE ALL THAT MONEY!

what are the safety requirements? honestly, i think its a crock of **** and just a scheme for them to extract as much cash out of you as possible. if you really want to get it done the right way, why not look into getting a vin from another state? one of the guys in New England where I used to live had an evo 7 titled out of florida...

The process is something like this, first you have to petition the EPA to accept, test, and approve the car, this from what I recall cost $800 for the petition, contracts, and paperwork. Then they have it, when they get to you car (they said it could take six months) it goes through about two weeks of emissions testing, parts replacing, retesting, etc, till they say, ok, it's good for the states. Then it gets handed back to you for it's DOT approval, where they take in teh neighborhood of 120 pictures of various parts, examine, remove and replace things like windows, doors, lights, speedo, etc...and this is the part I like, you can't do it ourself, they have to do it, and charge you or they won't approve it.

So in the end yea, it came out to about 5500-6000 total. This was all a few years ago when I was going to bring my rex back from Germany, so things may have changed, but I doubt for the better.
