Default would you run aem ems or hondata ??

ok, im currently looking for an ems for my built engine
unfortunately 70% the tuners i have talked to told me to go autronic or motec, but **** i cant afford those 2

so im thinking either to get aem or hondata , but i kinda like the aem more because i wont be bother getting a p28 ecu, so lets put the price difference aside ...

which unit is more powerful ?? aem or hondata ?

thanks guys

Without a doubt the AEM EMS is a much better and more powerful system..

aem more powerfull. Plus you don't need to reburn a chip everytime you want to make a change. In the end I think a hondata system with everything you would need to tune it is just a few bucks cheaper if not the same price as an aem unit.

You dont need to keep burning chips with hondata...you can tune on the fly then burn the final chip. AEM is a more powerful system but i head they have the tendency to fail alot. Why not just save for a motec system or something? You will be happier in the end.

To clarify, there is no reburing of chips if you have the romulator "real time" emulator.

I have tuned both. Hondata is MUCH easier to tune and get right but the AEM does have some cool features.

My $.02.

Oh, I use Hondata on my personal car and love it. Honestly though, you can't go wrong with either one.

Motec first
AEM EMS second
Hondata 3rd
for me. I use Hondata, but i want the Motec. Boosting on the highway? yes. better tuning dimensions.

I think there both great systems and you cant go wrong with either one. I myself have hondata.. One day i want to try out aem ems but for now hondata will get the job done. Its in what you want... Research about both of them and then decide.. I think they both have there ups and downs..

I don't see the need imo for anything other than hondata unless you have the extra money to spend or u are running say a drag car. I would get a hondata and spend the lil extra cash that the aem would be and upgrade the fuel set up.

Am I missing something here..

Unit Price
Base s200 Unit $295
Options Price
3 step rev limiter- Launch control and full throttle shift. $125
Boost capability. $200
Datalogging capability. $200
G Sensor module. $250
ROM Editor V3 (requires datalogging). $200
Romulator realtime emulator. $180
Programmer (requires ROM Editor V3) $180

Adds up to 1337.95
You can get the AEM EMS on websites for $1300 so its actually cheaper unless im reading something wrong.. The prices above were copied from hondata's website..

Only thing on there that isnt neccessary is the G sensor module which is $250.00 so without that the price is $1087.95.. But if you factor in the price of a p28 and shipping and all that then the AEM really isnt that much more..

I know people are going to argue with me on this point but, With the hondata all they did was "bandaid" a stock ecu to get it to do what they want.. Your still confined to the design and programming that was meant to drive a stock honda.. Basically its like taking a piece of hardware and changing the software to do more things.. With the AEM they built the software to do anything and everything that they wanted and then just built a hardware box to store the software.. Being that with the AEM the software drives everything so when you get software upgrades you get tons of new and great features that arent possible with the hondata..

I personally thing that the hondata is way to expensive for what you are getting.. Now if the total package was like $500 it would be great but its not..

Also another thing to look at is tuning software like Uberdata.. Its free and has many of the features as hondata does..

Wow not sure where people buy there hondata's from but I got mine fairly cheap with boost and dataloggin. Unless you are hella good at tuning why would u need the tunning options, 3 step is crap from hondata msd 2 step seems to be better imo. Just buy it used from a good reputable person.

I just quoted the prices from their website..

Also on a side note, the AEM unit has primary and 2-step rev-limiters that you can make either hard or soft cuts.. You can also do rev retard and spool your turbo up at the line.. I have a Airesearch T3 on a SOHC and I can spool 10psi at the line in about a second or two..

for all that money that you would spend on that hondata stuff wouldn't it just seam smarter to get uberdata which is FREE. It is virtually the same thing as hondata. Also it has new features and things coming out all the time in new versions.

1) Looking to tune yourself: Get aem. You can get hondata but with all the tuning options added on, it's about the same price as the aem.
2) A shop tuning it: Get hondata. You won't need to spend money on all the options if someelse is tuning it for you.

Anothing thing to consider is what "your" tuner is happier/familiar with.

aem is alot better. there are so many features on that thing i couldnt believe it. but hondata works too and is abou thalf the cost even with the chipped ecu. but if u got the cash then aem no brainer.

Okay as most of you know I work for AEM so my answer will sway more to AEM, but I will try to keep it fair for both sides.

The two systems the Hondata and the AEM are both really good systems. It is all dependent on what you want to do with the system and how much flexibility you want with your system. I have personally tuned and worked with every system out there. AEM, Hondata, Motec, Autronic, DFI, Electromotive. And honestly I like our system and Motec the best. Oh can I say that lol. For tuning and functions although of course the Motec with all the functions of the AEM is a lot more expensive. And yes I have used all of these systems on both drag cars and daily driven cars even the Motec.

The biggest mis-conception is that all systems are pretty much equal when it come to tuning fuel and spark. Some may have a larger grid to work with (more resolution), but they all do the same thing. It is all in the tuning of the car. The second thing would be all the functions after that, like knock control, boost control, traction control, additional sensor inputs and whatever else the ECU may have.

I would definately look into both systems and get whatever will suit you the best, but also another thing is make sure if you have someone tuning it that they are familar with the system and have tuned cars in the past successfully with the system. There is a section of our website where we list tuners which have come to AEM and have been taught by us the entire system.

In the end if you guys are actually still reading this I would choose the AEM. More functions than the Hondata. I can tune them both the same I just like the more options. Although Hondata maybe a better choice for you.
