Action Clutch 1MD: Chatter/shudder?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Summary:
Clutch chattered a lot for first 100 miles. After doing a hard break-in 3 times (3rd gear launches, etc.) it stopped chattering. I have 150 miles up until now and it's significantly better than before.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys...
I just got my 1MD installed. Plenty strong enough for my setup. Very light pedal feel, I would guess lighter than stock. Acura of Libertyville installed it for me (kinda pricey, but seem to do a good job). Was debating the GM synchromesh but decided to stick with Honda MTL.
I'm trying to figure out if this shudder will go away- When I take off at like 2500 RPM, and just try to keep the RPM steady until the speed picks up, the car jumps like the clutch is grabbing/releasing relatively quickly, like with each cylinder firing. It shakes the car pretty good. It's not loud, just unsettling and probably not the best thing for the tranny/motor mounts/anything else in the drivetrain.
Is this normal? Will it ever go away or will I have to explain to my wife that my car just got a little bit more tricky to drive
..
I've only had it for about 12 hours, and I "think" I can drive around the shudder, but it's pretty pervasive just as the clutch grabs, if it has any time at all to slip. Honestly, if it doesn't get any better, I'm going to regret not having bought a sprung clutch. My stock clutch really was in good shape after 50K miles, still strong enough to spin the tires throughout 2nd on concrete, but I'm going to up the boost later this month.
I've been searching... hoping to get some more 1st hand experiences of first install vs. broken in clutches. Esp. unsprung clutches. Do they get smoother/less chattery after breakin?
Later!
Chris

how was the break in Chris? How many miles after you installed it did it start happening?
Thats normal for that clutch....you have a pretty harsh clutch...its a 6 puck unsprung disk....it does that because of the 6 puck...although I have the 1ms which it is the sprung disk, it still does a lil bit of that if I rev it up a bit and ride the clutch....

Still breaking in. It started as I left the Acura lot (where it was installed). No real change in behavior after 25 miles.
I think I might try stiffer motor mounts too.

you can try to put it in 5th, rev it up a lil and ride the clutch a bit, try to get a better seated surface, that helps with pucks.
Ive installed the 1MD on a few cars, its okay i guess.

I'm trying that, being a little hard on the clutch. I've been starting in 2nd gear, riding the clutch a little while driving along.. only have 50 miles though
I haven't baked it yet though. I remember when my ITR was new (2k/3k miles) I was practicing launches on a abandoned country road. On the 5th/6th one, my car didn't move, clutch just spun and smoked... ooh that smell! Never did that again....

dont forget, there is a HUGE difference between a miba puck and an organic disc
just dont dump the clutch and actually launch the car in 5th
try it, be gentle and ull be good

i have 1md too, its the 6puck unsprung and it doesnt chatter, if i under rev it it will but that will happen with any clutch. lightweight flywheel im sure exagerates this.
are you sure you are not describing wheel hop? if i launch at 2500 the tires will spin, this clutch grabs, slipping is tricky but you should get the hang of it in a week
btw: a sprung clutch will chatter much more than unsprung.

I got the 2MD as well and the first 20k it would chatter I talked to the Kyle from KSmotorsports and he told me thats normal for the first 3000 km's
the chatter is now gone on my 2MD I duno but one thing seemed to fix the chatter for me was dropping the clutch and doing burnouts I guess it helped seat the surface better

When I said "launch", I meant just starting normally in traffic. It's definitely not wheel spin.. the car just jerks a couple of times just before the clutch fully engages.

Yeah, I just did a clutch-dropping 3rd gear launch last night, slipping at 7000 RPM until I got to 50 MPH and it grabbed. That might have helped, or maybe it was just the heat. I'll find out this morning on my way to work.

Nope, not fixed.
I did notice my front end bounces up and down when it happens (like wheel hop, except it's clutch hop). I tried to move up and down my driveway slope slipping the clutch, and the engine doesn't seem to move around when it happens. *shrug*. I was hoping to verify with my eyes that engine mounts might make it better, but rolling up and down the driveway isn't exactly a precise recreation.

Hmm, well it's getting better slowly but surely. My wife borrowed the car and only complained about it jumping in reverse. Oh well. Hopefully in a week or two it will be even better!

It didn't, at least not as much.
Anyhow- it's getting a lot better as it's broken in. It didn't chatter at all on the way to work today, 30 minutes of stop and go to get about 7 miles.
I had done a couple of more harsh-clutch-burning things, like launching in third again and also letting it burn for about 5 seconds 7000 RPM in 5th gear while cruising at 40 MPH.
I guess sometimes you have to teach the clutch a lesson! :D
I'll post again if it's really done chattering, but I think it is.

Yeah, I actually decided on the 1MD based on his article.
