filling DX tranny MTF.... which hole?
this is for my buddies 88 DX 4r. I think it's suppose to take 1.75 quarts of honda MTF.
I know that you can fill it from the VSS, but what is another place?
Also how do you know if it's full or at the right level of fluids?

you pull the drain plug out...drain the old oil...
just above that there is a large bolt...pull that off
i use the breather ... there is a plug on it just about where the cable connects to the tranny...there is a plug on it. get some vacuum hose and then attach it to a funel. once oil comes out the large bolt hole your set.
its simple.
the vss spot is just as good.

On the passenger side behind the CV shaft:

You fill it up until it runs out the filler hole..

Oh wow - I wonder what manual transmission fluid/oil is supposed to go in then???
should he replace his turn signal blinker fluid with that?

No. You are supposed to put "10x30 motor oil" in your MOTOR.
You are supposed to put transmission oil in your transmission.
HONDA MTF came from the factory... not MOTOR oil.
MTF = Manual Transmission Fluid.

You CAN use regular motor oil in your tranny. Its the same weight. Nothing wrong with using Honda MTF, but just keep in mind regular motor oil is another option. That's what i use and no problems.

The factory service manual calls for 1.8 liters of
SAE 10w30 or 10w40 oil rated SE of SF grade...
{which is motor oil, not gear oil}
Some GM manual transmissions use Dextron ATF instead of gear oil..

so what is this breather that he asked about? anybody have pics?
I'm doing this to my wagon this weekend. Also, I've heard that GM synchromesh will prolong the life of my tranny (at 237k I'm starting to worry), but some have said that it's too heavy for a honda tranny and although gear grinding may lessen, the overall life of the tranny will decrease. Who's right? Has anybody actually had a bad experience adding this stuff?
thx

i don't have a pic, but if you look right above the cable mount you'll see it. most of the time there is a black rubber thing on it. just look. its in plain view.

Phil not sure what program you have at work but have you read about what they tell you to use in the newer trans, they tell you to use Honda mtf, they say regular motor oil can be used for a short period but it will cause damage in the long run, sounds like b.s to me.

Can you really refill your tranny through the VSS hole?
Meaning pulling the VSS cable and filling it through there?

well i tried a new method today... since it was time to change my driver side axle anyways... i purchased a transmission/large gear on & off nozzle $2.50 from WalMart (ATTENTION WALMART SHOPPERS - price check on automotives dept.)... basically you can just screw this on & off device onto the transmission oil bottle and this also has a flexible nozzle hose... o yeah this would also work for changing motor oil...
so yeah... i used that on&off device and i just use the axle hole to fill my transmission fluid... i got enough room in my firewall side to lift the bottle to that side and adjust the flow of the oil into that hole....
i will try to get pics up by next week

yea u can use heat to warp that bolt on...
or
you can use the PB catalyst bolt spray or WD-40 and also use a long pipe to help torque out the bolt.. either that or use a 1/2" breaker bar if room allows it...

Thats how I always do it, but its a lot of work. I have to take my strut bar, intake, and starter off to get to the plug on the top. I'd rather do that to make sure the oil isn't just bouncing off of the differential and seeping out again...
