Default Dyno session... What a disappointment!

I was expecting higher numbers, especially considering that some R’s are putting down similar numbers with only a few bolt-on modifications. I thought I would have been at least 180 with my mods below.

My current modifications are as follows:
AEM CAI
JDM DC 4-1
Test pipe
Toda Spec A
Toda Cam gears
Bored throttle body 64.5mm at the plate/70mm at the opening
AEM adjustable fuel pressure regulator
Did a compression test before the dyno and was at 240 accross all 4

Future mods:
I will have a skunk ecu and vafc shortly. Do you think 180’s is unrealistic with tuning, considering I am only at 175 now?

whoa. sorry dustin. you should have done better than that.

go OBD1 and your power will go to low to mid 180s easily.

Both the ECU and V-AFC should help, your A/F ratios are all over the place. Looks like my car when it had six, yes, 6, bad intake valves...

.....i'd say try the vafc first. you may not need the skunk2 ecu. Use that $ for dyno time. I posted a thread on street tuning not too long ago. Use that on the dyno and it'll definitely help you. I'd say ~15 passes and you'll be at ~185whp easy...

I'm going to have to agree and say that the V-AFC will help out a lot, you should have no prob hitting 180+.

The ECU has already been bought and paid for quite some time ago same with the VAFC...Just waiting on the OBD1 jumper. The weather was typical FL; humid and 81, but the numbers were SAE. I havn't messed with the cam gear settings, only the fuel pressure due to time constraints. The engine seemed to like 40psi the best anything more/less the power would drop.

tuning is everything.....
untuned cams are worthless. After instaling ITR cam, I gained only 6 whp. My HP was 166 whp after droping the cams without tuning. After tuning, I was making 176 whp, 10 wph more!
YOur A/F looks all messed up

The cams are at +4/+2 or close to that setting which was recommended to me. My compression is stock, for now.

Did you have the stock exhaust on? I see the header and test pipe, but no mention of an exhaust. That may actually be hurting you on the top end.
And yes, with a little tuning, things will look better...

stock exhaust because I haven't decided on which exhaust I wan't. That is something I am picky about...don't wan't a raspy loud exhaust, but at the same time, I don't wan't to pay $900 for a mugen twin loop. Looking for something in the middle like an apexi ws.

you need an exhaust, any exhaust get a custom one done and save money. Don't be concerned with peak hp numbers, focus on the torque and keeping that flat all the way through. With the vafc you'll be able to keep the af ratio constant.

go obd1, get the vafc, and if you havent done head work then do that as well..a good port and polish always adds to the numbers...with just an ecu and vafc 180's is very possible

Stock exhaust is fine on the R, don't waste your money unless you get a full 2.5" one.

Tuning, tuning, tuning, tuning .... you need to dyno tune it definitely.

With i/h/e/camgears/V-AFC in my '98, I was at 178/126 ....... 175/125 without the V-AFC. You will be in the 180+ range with some good tuning.

RealTypeR... what have you done to your car for 227 whp???

BTW... I see that you and S&P are from Orlando... do you guys meet up ever and if so where? I live like 5 mins from UCF. Let me know. Later.

S&P... where'd you get your car dyno'd? I want to get my VAFC tuned on the dyno but I'm waiting until I get cams and until I can find somewhere to tune it that is knowledgable with imports.

Real Type R is powered by the dark side. NOS. I believe S&P went to Siboneys dyno. Email me wes@titanmotorsports.com or PM me and I can get you thier contact info. I also work at a shop so if you need cams or anything of that nature let me know.

Tanabe'd GSR:
wes is right, I had the car dynoed at siboneys. The dyno is in-ground which makes setup time a snap. Their rates are fairly decent and the people down there are all right. If you need cams or anything else like that you should hit wes (naturalvx) up, I know he can get jun&skunk and probably most others as well.

Wes... you work at Titan, correct? I've been in a few times with my boy Chris Yepez... he has a 92 Talon and he bought his SAFC off of you guys. Do you know his brother Carlos Yepez (silver 99 eclipse GST w/ a 16g)? He's friends with Nero and Bottle and he introduced me to your shop.

BTW... my dad said that he met you a few weeks ago. I don't know why he was at the shop (hopefully he bought me some ****) but he specifically told me that he met you. Does the name Don Lisenby ring any bells?

S&P... how much did Siboneys charge you? Do they use a wideband O2 sensor? Do they do work with AFC's? Thanks bro!
