Default Look What happened to my Tranny (56K Beware!) fixed pics

OK, so I buy my car from an insurance auction thinking I got a good deal. Here's a pic of the car

So I get the car repaired, change almost everything on the driver side suspension (Knuckles, LCA, shock, intermediate shaft axle) I take it out of the shop and from 2nd gear on up there is a noticeable gearbox noise. Then I make a right turn and it seems like one of the axles is really craped feels like the car is falling apart. I take it for an oil change and look under the car and I see this.

There was only about a 1/4 quart of oil in the tranny, I only drove it like 5 miles that way, u guys think it did alot of damage? Also u think the differential is damaged? I'm gonna crack the housing open anyway to see if I can have it repaired so I'll try to snap a few pics.

I guess when the driverside axle got pushed in the differrential broke the other end of the axle seal with part of the houseing attached to it.

Now my question is can I get this welded back on? or will any H22 Tranny housing fit the 5 gen tranny?

Also can u guys please tell me what kinda clutch/flywheel these r?

yes that is the Intermediate shaft, my friends n I took out the tranny without taking any of the axle nuts out

Thanks in Advance

That's an ACT clutch with what looks like their organic disc. The flywheel I'm not sure about, but it may be an Exedy.

Is it just me, or is it part of the actual tranny casing that came off in that first few pics???

indeed it is part of the tranny housing that came off. Can I get away by only changing the gearbox housing? or welding that piece back on? or do I have to change the whole tranny.

Also what year trannies have the same gearbox housing as the 5th gen ludes.

I'm not sure if you can weld that up; try hittin up a welding shop to ask them if they can weld up cast aluminum.

As long as that's not an SH Prelude, you can use any tranny from a 92-01 manual Prelude, or any Accord tranny that was with an F22 motor. The gear ratio's will be different, so keep that in mind.

I also think the F22 trannies need the dowel pins to be removed for them to bolt up to the H-motors.

I'm gonna get rid of the ACT clutch, I already ordered an Exedy OEM clutch because the pressure plate was rediculously stiff for daily driving. U think the Exedy OEM and this Flywheel is a good combo? or should I change to stock flywheel.

Thanks

by the way the car is going to stay stock other than the AEM intake, and maybe a catback in the future

That's not what he broke; the casing is busted.

i'd just replace the tranny...casings ar the same for h22a and h23 trannies from 92-01 as long as it isn't a Type-SH or a JDM M2B4 LSD tranny

if i were you i would open that tranny up and have a look, its seems like when the car got in the accident it got hit so hard that the axles actually pushed the differential (sp?) around in the casing and thats what cracked the housing,

seriously i would open it

Well I did open the tranny up, everything seems fine inside, the differential looks fine I saw a little spot on the inside of the housing that got grinded down by the differential a bit, but everything seems fine, all the bearing are normal, very little play.

Here are a couple of pics

I couldn't resist but getting the car. When I saw it, it had brand new tires, H & R sports with Tokico blues, and very clean interior, The flywheel and Clutch I discovered later, well the clutch was pretty noticable when I first drove it home from the shop because it felt like trying to push a 2 ton brick with ur foot.

Oh By the way, got the car out of the auction for $5000 (including tow and DMV fees) and so far total is 7500. 1300 to repair it, reused bumper n hood, changed fender, headlight (got it for cheap $75!!) LCA, knucle, endlink, and refurb axle, dirver side Tokico shock.

Is my syncros lookin good?

Need help from the tranny gods! :-)

Sorry to break the bad news but I think you will need a replacement cradle.

I say the cradle because the impact may have pushed the LCA mount back. Have a look HERE and there is 2x pics that show the damaged cradle and the replacement, Have a look at yours from underneath the car, If it is damaged and you don't change it then the camber will be out = bad handling.

So IMO your gonna need

*Cradle
*Inner steering arm
*Radius Rod
*possibly steering knucle if UCA is damaged.

*Also a possible issue will be the frame, It would be ideal for you to take the car to a laser Jig place to check and straighten (f needed) the frame.

WOW u gave me the scare! I just went down in the middle of the night and checked the underside of my car, and I noticed that the 5th gen Prelude's cradle is totally different than the 4th Gens, and I really didn't notice anything that was bent near the control arm. Although I did notice the driver side wheel is in a bit at the bottom then it is on the top, I always thought that the alignment would fix that. Well at least I hope it will, if it doesn't I'm gonna take it back to the shop and have them figure it out.

Thanks for the heads up.

Oh yeah forgot to mension, my steering knuckle had snapped in the middle, and the LCA didn't seem that bent but I changed it for good measure, the steering rod is a little bent on the adjustment part (treaded part) but I think that shouldn't be a problem. Also the Front Tie rod to the driver side wheel was a little hard to put back on, repair guy said that would need to be changed.

Just wondering but how do the alignment guys align the camber in the wheels without the use of a camber kit? because the LCA or the UCA don't look like they're adjustable.

i think you'd be best finding a new tranny, i suppose you could get it welded or something and throw some anti shock mtf in it but i'd be worried about that tranny casing piece breaking off again.

by the way, you have an act xtss and a clutchmasters flywheel... exact same setup i ran with till the ole rod bearings turned up in my oil pan good combination, makes driving the prelude much more fun when it revs faster.
