Thinking of replacing the R
I'm thinking of trading in my 01 R for a 93 and above RX7 TT. Is this a good move or not? I can't decide. Some of the factors I put into mind are reliability and collector value. One of the main reasons why I bought the R was because I knew it would be a true classic decades from now. Will the 7 hold a similar if not greater legacy?
In the power dept. the seven beats the R without a doubt. Handling?(I'm not sure?)
As far as creature comfort goes, I'm sure the seven is more inspiring. After all, our cars are just Integra's at heart.
Looks? I'm sure everyone has their own opinion but I think both cars look equally appealing.

As far as looks, I drool every time I see a last-gen RX7 drive by - and performance wise those cars kick ***. I've heard reliability nightmare stories from people, but I'm sure if properly dealt with and in the right hands they are great.
But I love my R and what it represents... that car is an instant classic.

when i used to follow the rx7 forums i remember lots of newbies asking the same question as you. i thinkt he interior looks great, way better than our R's. but as for reliablity, if you want a daily driver be prepared to pay for it. true that if you take care of it, it should run just as reliable as anything, but you juts never know with those rotary engines. resale value, i honestly don't know.
ON THE OTHER HAND, they look something like this.

remember the rx7 is a super car. . . its a great car to play with,
but rotaried and turbo rotaries at that might get to be a pain if you dont know them . i know alot of guys who run starlets and **** that know their **** about these motors., but if you dont got no connex , i would prob stay away from it, they can get quarky and cost buko bucks.
also good luck finding one thats not beat, , another downside of getting a tt , supra, rx7 or z
other than that i would drop a nutt to have one .

I wouldn't get a 3rd gen to replace your R. But if you can swing it as a 2nd car, then go for it! 3rd gens aren't meant to be daily drivers, AMHIK.

All I can say is MKIV...
Haha, I agree, but unfortunately a MKIV goes for around $25000, where as you could find a good condition RX7 with a blown motor for like $11,000. add a 3K motor and your in business.
Some of the factors I put into mind are reliability...
If you want reliable, ITR is wayyyyyyyy better than RX7, actually, before I bought my R in 97, I also think about getting a 93+ Rx& and I actually come close to make a good deal, however, I read through a RX7 forum and their owners are having huge problems to make the 7 reliable, they even called it lemon 7, so it kind of scare me and I decided to buy my R. Don't take me wrong,I like 7 and it is a very true sport car, but it is just not that reliable..... Sure, 7 is way faster in terms of speed. But I highly doubt that you can find a good condition 7 now since their engine is well known hard to maintanence & repair. Search through some 7 forum and ask their owners. I am sure they can give you more insight, just my .02
i will never trade my car for a old car u don't even know if the car's engine still strong or what ..
even it's a super car so what ? don't waste your $ to get that car if you have $$ get the brand new supercar.
that's what i think ..
i will never get a used car which is that old...
think about it u will gona pay some more $$$ to repair that old car in the future if something wrong..

i've had two 3rd gen RX7s as daily drivers , my first one as a headache but thats because i didnt know anything about them when i bought it so after a couple of problem and lots of research i found out how reliable they can be, the rotary motor is a VERY strong motor..never had a problem with the second one , they are the best car out there period , i just sold my Type-R to get another one but decided not to just because mazda started production of the RX8 for the US. Honestly i would go ahead and buy it, dont even think about it twice, it will be a good time and for the money you are not gonna get anything better. By the way, the Supra has NOTHING on the RX7, period.
You will regret it. I gurantteed you. Many people appreciate the R more after driving other cars. If you can buy a new RX7, for sure, go ahead, but trade the r for a used 94-95 car. It's hard to justified.
AllMotor is right. The 13B-REW is a very very reliable motor (I have over 120K on mine). Whenever an RX-7 blows up, it's almost always user error or lack of knowledge about modifying them. For instance I'm sure most peoples first mods would be a full exhaust and high-flow intake for the RX-7, right? Seems harmless enough and it's probably the most commony performed mods on piston engined cars. However you do that on a 3rd gen RX-7 and you're lucky if the motor lasts a week. Unlike most other cars, you have to address fuel sympathies very very early in the mod game.
All it takes is some basic education before you start modding and the RX-7 can be very reliable. But I've lost faith in peoples capacity for common sense and ability to research things before they start "fixing" stuff that aint broke -- that's really the only reason why I'd recommend having a daily driver before buying a 3rd gen RX-7.

Ive wanted a 3rd gen since 93, and before i bought my R i had a meeting set up with Peter Farrel to talk about one of his cars. But if you do the research, ie, talk to other people that have owed them, its not worth it. Everyone i came across, except peter, said they were junk. RX7s are like strippers, they are really cool to look at and you know theyd be fun, but you know you wouldnt want one as your your permanent ride. Keep the R

I'm sure if someone were knowledgeable about the car, they could avoid its shortcomings. In the end, I came across another R and bought it. I knew it would be reliable and fun. Maybe not as fast or good-looking, but the R is just a step for me until I get my M3 or Z06.
