3dr bumper on 4dr extra notes, it can be done to look near perfect!
Hi,
I have been reading up on search on fitting a 3dr hatchie bumper on a 4 dr civic.
A guy recently on here with a silver one did a pretty good write up and I would like to add a few notes.
1. The bumper support prong (next to headlight) needs bending down and bumper trimming accordingly.
2. The ends of the bumper near the fender sit too far out and if you bend them in the line of the wheel well on the bumper sticks out too far.
I got a heat gun, heated the plastic and gently bent the bumper to fit the fender. It was a case of bending it too far then settling it at the right point and cooling with cold water.
The very end was too far in towards the wheel, so I made a cut about an inch from the end, you'll see where, heated the end and gently bent this out. It now follows the fender 99% as good as the original 4dr one.
3. Some people drill a hole in the bumper to mount in the original place, but this could easily tear and pull through, or like the guy with the silver car make a bracket up.
I marked the fender and drilled a hole to line up with the 3 dr bumpers mounting hole, then elongated the hole to slip in the original plastic threaded clip, screwed on the bumper and it fits the original way very securely with no need for brackets.
4. Final thing is you don't need 3dr corner lights. The 4dr corners foul the bumper but some trimming the bumper with a knife (its hidden so it don't matter if you need to cut a small hole) and they fit on fine.
I am VERY pleased with the results.
Unfortunately I have no camera but its been posted loads of times. Just Imagine a 3dr bumper on a harvard blue 4dr that fits fine, looks as if it was made for the car and easy to mount! It only took a morning to do.
Hope this helps, its good to give something back to H-T!
