Default Turbo guys, how big are your exhaust piping and how loud is it?

Going to turbo an LS and want to know how big of an exhaust I should get. I don't want anything loud. I know the turbine will help quite it down a bit, but I also hear many turbo hondas sound, well like a honda. I'm trying to get away from that loud, annoying sound. I was thinking 2.25 to 2.5" piping. Too small?

BTW, this is my daily beater that I need to keep quite and 100% streetable. I'll probably end up using a 14b to a 16g mitsubishi turbo. They both have a pretty small exhaust a/r, so I might do 3" piping, depends on how loud your guys exhaust are. I want to hear from first hand experience before learning the hard way

Thanks for any advise

I had a Apexi N1 on my car with no cat and it was pretty quiet with the turbo. Now i'm running open DP and I drive it 50 miles a day with no problems, kinda loud though

3" piping, 3" cat, 3" magnaflow race muffler.............loud as ****. But if anything its making me get better gas mileage, cuz I try to keep it between 2000-3000 rpm to avoid the noise.

Get a resonator, it helps a LOT.

3" downpipe, 22" resonator, 3" apexi N1. Quiet enough to daily drive fine, and I can roll into my neighbourhood late at night without waking anyone up.

3" downturn.

loud.

if you say a cat, a resonator, and a muffler is loud then you've never heard a str8 pipe N/A race motor lol.

Thanks guys. I think I'm gonna try 3" with a high flow cat, resonator, and a Magnaflow chambered muffler.

Pete, if you think a honda NA race motor is loud, then you should hear an NA rotary Ear piercing, seriously

Had a 2.5" DP--->2.5" TP--->60mm exhaust w/chambered muffler and it was silent...awesome for daily driving.

Just slapped on a 3" exhaust, no cat no resonators, its crazy loud. No cell phones, radio has to be cranked up to hear anything. Going to add a 3" DP and 22" resonator and see what happens.

2.5" DP
2.5" Cat
2.5" x 22" perf core resonator
2.5" summit turbo oveal muff

it's deep and pretty quiet. sounds like a sohc with a Greddy SP. I like it and the catback part only cost $90 including the mandrel bends.

I hardly agree that the turbine will quiet it down at all. Just built a kit for a GSR with a fully worn out tanabe racing medalion and it was absolutly no quieter than before, even with stock cat.

2.5" Downpipe
Stock cat
"Cherry Bomb" muffler as a resinator
2.25" mandrel bent
Big shiny muffler at the end

It sounded pretty good while N/A, I used the muffler silencer cause I like it really quiet. Once I put the turbo on it became really quiet so I pulled the silencer off. It sounds great once i went turbo

The turbine wheel and housing both have an impact on how loud the exhaust is. Depending on what size wheel, what a/r, what type of wheel, it can substantially lower exhaust sound. A 14b turbo is pretty small so it will definitely lower the exhaust tone

3" here I come

I have a 3" Thermal, 3" carsound cat, 3" resonator, and it's too loud for long highway drives. I heard Thermal will weld in a resonator into their muffler for free if you ship it to them, and I'm considering doing this.

3" DP
Gutted Cat
2.25" Thermal Cat back

Crap this is quiet! Its definately quieter than it was when it was NA. I was going to get a 3" Kteller exhuast kit, but now I think i will leave it, and get an E-Out someday down the road. I like having the quiet exhaust.

3" downpipe...3" K teller piping...3" dynomax bullet muffler as resonator...3" magnaflow on the end. No cat...It's not exactly quiet, but it's got a really nice sound to it...low grumble.
