Typer black smoke at high Rev's and burn's oil no leak - please help
My 98 typeR has 80k miles and no mods all stock.
Recently I have noticed black soot film on the rear bumper and around the exhaust. Also It is using oil approximately o.75 quarts per 800 miles if I run it hard. If I don't run it hard, oil level does not drop, but the soot problem still exists. There are no oil leaks and the mileage is as usual.
When I floor it and run hard my friends have noticed black smoke from the tail pipe. I have got a compression test done and all the 4 cylinders are in the 210-220 range.
The oil leak down test also showed 10-13% on all cylinders. The spark plugs also did not show any signs of oil. The dealer says that the test results are with in tolerance levels and no need to repair.
As far as performance goes, the car is running smooth and giving me decent mileage and I am very happy with it if all I have to do is keep monitoring and adding oil when needed.
My questions are below:
1. Is there a problem with my car such as blow by rings etc? Is it buring a mixture of gas and oil ?
2. What do I need to do to get rid of black smoke ?
3. Is there anything I can buy to attach to the muffler so that it does not spray soot on my cars back? It is taking a lot of work to get the soot off the wing and the bumper.
4. Is it ok to burn oil If run it hard and at high rev's when changing gears ?
Please help. I am worried about my car. Also any mechanics trustworthy in the Atlanta area ?
black smoke is a rich condition, unburned fuel
blue smoke is burning oil
are your o2 sensors in good working condition?

The dealer has replaced both o2 sensors because they showed up in the check engine light during warranty.

Fairly common for higher mileage ITR's to burn oil as you are. I'm at 86K and doing the same thing (2.5 qts per 3K) The car also runs rich too which just makes the problem seem worse as you get the visual trail of smoke when flogging the car at high rpms. Same soot on the bumper which has just increased at the car has aged, but the car compression checks great over 210 across the board.
To be honest, if you can live with the oil consumption you're probably okay to just leave it as is, remembering to top the oil off regularly. You should also do some searching on this, I know this has been discussed a few times in detail.

I'm with this guy.
Don't panic and don't undertake unnecessary repairs just because your car is at the high end of the consumption tolerance.
Also, as others have asked, I'd like to know what kind of oil you are using. It's possible you could lessen the consumption slightly, especially if this is a brand new issue, by switching brands or types of oel. You said you don't remember what kind of oil you are using, which is a sign that somebody else does it for you...perhaps they switched brands or types and didn't let you know.

I think I have the same problem.
mine was due to changing the cat from a stock GSR cat to a carsound and possibly also adding a header.
when I flog it, i see a bunch of stuff coming out from my rear view mirror and the car kind stinks
i call it my "Bond, James Bond" smoke screen
i think I am running rich. oil consumption i always monitor every fuel up now.

This is exactly the same as my car. I have to use mother's paint cleaner after washing my car to get the stain off. The soot has been on my car since I started ******* with it. New o2 did nothing. Hondata tuning did nothing. I have learned to except the suck and deal with it. The oil consumption is a concern. I'm using 1.5 litres per 1000km. Comp is good no leak down yet. The engine has 5k since the build up for turbo and has always been the same. I would like to hear what other people have to say about this.
But the car runs awesome and burns out through the first 3 gears so I'm pretty happy.

Same problem here, although the car put down great dyno numbers and seems to run strong. I am currently trying different oils..Castrol Syntec worked well, now using Mobil-1 Syn. It burned more oil for the first 500miles, but now seems to burn less and less. I'll have to wait and see if it continues, but if not, I change it every 2500-3000 miles religiously anyway.
Thanks a lot for the support. I check oil once every week. The dealer uses Pennzoil Synthetic blend 10w 30. I am using castrol 10W-30 to top it off.
Another mechanic suggested using 5w-20. Is this a good idea ?
I agree with u all, I don't want to mess with the engine at this point.

!!
Who originated this practice? Especially using as much oil as you are using between changes, I would definitely "top it off" with the same oil and viscosity your mechanic is using.
The oil that your mechanic is using is unusual for a dealer. Are you sure?

No, not really.
At your motor's age, you want more protection, not less. 5w30 is what's recommended, and I would not go below that for a car as old as yours.

I am not from Japan, but I could be in Japan
Oh, and I use Castrol GTX
I just continue to check my oil consumption every fill up as said
