strange clicking coming from under the hood

strange clicking coming from under the hood
seems to happen around the vtec enguagment point. happens once at around 4500 rpm, again at vtec engagement and then twice afterwords in less than 1000 rpm
it seems like maybe secondary butterflies arent quite working correctly.
am i off base here with that assumption?
i cant quite figure it out. i want to get a general idea of what it could be before i try and tear things apart to check.
not throwing any CEL codes either.
anybody have any ideas?
