Help - what is this coming out of my muffler??
i assume it's the packing that insulates and keeps the noise down. about a month or 2 ago my exhaust note jumped considerably. is this common? the exhaust is pretty old. should i get it chopped and put on a es/magnaflow muffler?
i'm not joking. the brillo pad idea never occured to me.
1. who the hell would do something dumb like that?
2. my car was parked at my friend's apt all weekend, rear backed up 3" from a brick wall.
i tried pulling on it when i first noticed and it seemed stuck in there. that lead me to believe it came from the inside. however, i'm no expert on what's in an exhaust.
EDIT: nope. i just pulled on it and the ribbon-like stuff kept stretching and stretching. it's coming from inside the muffler.

You mean aesbestos? It's not allowed to be used anymore.

awesome sh*t in your exhaust, kind of looks cool... if that is your packing what kind of "jump" in the tone do you hear now? is it higher?
i say its a good reason for an new aftermarket exhaust

you can have gaskets made of it. they sell it at autozone, you just can't use it for insulation inside of your house

well, this exhaust is pretty old too. i got it in '02 and the guy i bought it off of had it on '00. i had suspected there might be a whole in the exhaust but i don't have the tools too get under the car and check it out.

If I'm correct that is the Trust or Greddy SP exhaust. And yea that is the steel wool packing material inside your muffler coming out. You should soon see cotton squares coming out too, which is the fiberglass sound deading material. I had a similar exhaust on my Civic back then too. The inside rusted out and all the packing material got blown out. There's a tube inside the muffler that will roll around once all the material is gone. You can either get the muffler cut off and replace it with the es/magnaflow like you said or you can fish the tube that's inside your muffler out. It will look like this.
I had a HKS Hyper on my second gen teg. Exhaust was like 3 years old. Same thing started happening. The car felt held back some and the exhaust note was quieter. That's when I noticed the brillo stuff coming out. I pulled it all out and it was fine. Exhaust note was slightly louder but that's all.
ahaha, that picture loaded and i was immediately "WTF?!"
I know there is steel wool in certain resonators... but sounds like they have solved it w/ their above answers

This happened to my friend's 300ZX TT w/a GReddy exhaust. We called his car the "kitten shooter" afterwards.
Should the muffler be re-packed? Where is that done?

gentlemen, thank you. looks like i'm gonna get me a new muffler.
how do you think the es oval or magnaflow will sound with greddy piping, no resonator and carsound 2.25 cat?
