Default What do you guys think about light weight flywheels ?

Well I searched the drag racing forum and only came up with about 5 topics so I thought I would ask. I am thinking about getting a fidanza 7.5 flywheel for my car. The car will be street driven and it will also see the track. I have heard some people make some points on why there bad and then I have heard some people say some good things about them. The car will be n/a so keep that in my to. Just want to hear what you guys think about them.

7.5 lbs is way too light for an allmotor street car.

go with maybe a 12 lb. flywheel.

i have a 14 lb. on my SOHC car.... (street)
and soon to have a 10-12lb. on my DOHC hatch. (track)

cant go wrong with OEM.

i didnt know the ITR flywheel was that light.

i do have ITR pressure plate with clutchmasters stage 2 clutch....
feels AWESOME. maybe ITR flywheel would help the lower RPM revs before VTEC.

Most people would prefer a very light flywheel <10 lbs for road racing. For drag racing you want to keep some momentum while launching and between shifts so something like the ACT street lite would be optimal.

7.5 is too light... if your going to drive it daily, its isnt fun with a flywheel that light. you should go with a 10-12 lbs one cause between shifts your rpms wont drop so fast. a heavier one will keep your rpms a little higher so you wont be out of your powerband...

If you know how to drive and your making enough power, then the lighter the better. Less rotating mass = less drivetrain loss.

"the better driver you are", blah blah blah..... everyone and their brother thinks that they are the best driver in the world.....

but seriously, the lighter the flywheel, the LESS practical it is in real life situations.

think about if you have a chipped ECU.... with a high redline, all you need is ONE slipup, and you can **** up your motor.

i wouldnt go any less than 10 LBS. FOR A STREET CAR.

Well I have talked to people that had the 7.5 and they said its easy to drive daily, I understand to rotational mass theory though. As far as the gsr or type R flywheel there just to heavy for me.

I would but last time I looked the TODA flywheel was almost twice the price as others.

Can't you just raise your launch rpm a bit with a light flywheel? Who lets off the gas between shifts while racing? LOL

Well if 7.5 is to light I'm gonna have to start looking for another flywheel, I don' like clutchmasters though but I'll have to see what else is available, I would like to get some people in here that have the 7.5 flywheel and get there opinion on it.

Running the Tilton set-up in my turbo hatch. Belive the Tilton flywheel weighs in at about 6lb's. TTotal clutch/flywheel combo weighs in at about 14lb's.

Pull consistant 1.60 60'
consistant 11.40's
320whp
93 VX hatch gutted but not stripped or cut-up.

Not hard to launch. using a 2step launch controll set at 7800. Yes it does fall between shifts when driving in town. On the track I never notice it. It is by no means hard to drive.

im with b18cx here... i ran a fidanza all last year in my daily driven turbo hatch, honestly, if ur losing that much RPM between shifts then u need to learn how to shift faster

That just makes me want one even more, if you had no launch controll would it still be that hard to keep it steady and lauch ?

when my car was a street car i launched at 7K and had no issues. now as a track only car i launch at 8k and above. all without launch limiter. i just **** wind the motor and hold it at whatever i want to launch at and dump the clutch.
