OT--> buying a canadian car , bringing into US... problems/issues? thanks!
I only ask this in the ITR forum because you guys are a bit more serious and a bit more honest and mature with your responses, except for 'D'.
What is entailed with buying a car in Canada, say a used ITR or civic, when I have to register it in the US, in New York to be exact.
Any duties/taxes to think about?
Any problems at NY State DMV when registering the car?
Any paperwork he should be sure to get or ask the seller for?
My roommate is looking into buying a used civic in canada, and I need to help him out.
--->thank you guys in advance

Okay, this is what you need:
1) Find a brokerage in CANADA that will arrange everything for you, customs, duty, and all the paperwork. You will need to provide the Bill of Sale (that's the only thing you'll need to provide beside your address, SSN, and other personal info). The NY DMV has a official copy you can obtain at any of their branches, A notary is not needed. Usually a confirmation by mail will do.
2) Find a shipping company that will deliver accross the border, approximately 1000 USD depending on locale.
3) Get a letter from Honda stating the car will meet emissions and safety (basically anything the cars has in the US, it must also be present on the Canadian counterpart, including but not excluded to air bags, seat belts, crush zone bumpers, etc).
4) Change the kmph to mph
5) Find out if your local insurance company will insure "gray market" vehicles (Cars produced outside the United States). You might actually want to do this first.
That's it, the main thing is to locate a brokerage that will take care of this for you. They do charge a fee, but it's well worth it. Leave it to the professionals.
In case you're wondering how I know so much, I recently had a long conversation with a Canadian resident regarding the purchase of his vehicle, so I am pretty familiar with the steps.
BTW, if this is in regards to David's car, please help the guy out, it's a great car for the price.
