Default i blew my h23vtec last night

with the motor broken in and ready to go i decided to hit the track and see what she can do.

h23 block bored .25 over
type-s pistons
polished and balanced crank
ported polished h22 head with 3* valve job
hondata p28
i/h/e

the fucked up thing is that the motor ran great but it was a hot day and i didnt let the car cool down before i race it............ so at 7800 on third gear boooooooom there goes my rod bearing.......i am so pissed and dissapointed beacuse i let the car cruise for the rest of the 40 feet before the finish line and i got a 14.2................ not even a 13 sec timeslip tp show for it.

no more H23 crank for me the things are junk.they create a lot of heat.
h22 going in tomorrow

Did you install oil squirters?

Did you dyno the car before you blew it up?? Were you making power that high in the RPM band??

Why did you feel the need to take it up that high?

Seems to me the P28 ran you lean. I don't know why everyone puts that civic ecu in their cars. They're junk period for a prelude. Should've put a p13 in with hondata and you would have been fine. Then again I highly doubt your h23 makes power at that kind of rpm.

the p28 was tuned & i have brand new bearings, and yes i have oil squiters.

the car still pulled even @7500 so i was shifting between 7500-7800

The main reason why your motor blew is that you did not do a complete balance of the entire crank, pulley and clutch as one when you assembled it. It is also important to make sure all your rods balanced correctly and you give enough clearance for the bearings. Find out why it blew before you point the finger at the H23 Crank.

I am making a ton more power than your car and my motor is staying together at over 8500rpm. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the setup it is in your assembly process. Just my 2 cents.

Good Luck

Butt dyno or actualy dyno?? I am just curious. Not trying to bust your ballZ.

I am a firm believer in not over-revving a car if you don't have to. It seems to create more problems that it solves.

I am also leaning towards it being a build error, but noone will know until it's cracked open.

What shop did you take the bottom end to to be balanced? What were the clearances like on the mains and rods?

....if it was indeed the rod bearing that let loose, then I think it's more reason to believe that the oil squirters should NOT have been used.

machine shop did the balancing and picked out the bearings...... that is the fourth motor ive buit and trust me it isnt a buid error

the motor was simply over reved i know my mistake.............ive taken it to 7600-7800 all the time before i hit the track, it finally gave out there though........... the h23 suck *** with bearings anyways.......

I will have to disagree here, at least for now. Maybe it sucks in stock form, but it only takes some massaging, IMO, to make it reliable.

as 7800 this is true. i would have got the motor tuned,
lowered the vtec point, and shift just high enough to
land in vtec in the next gear. It would simply put less stress
on the motor.

That is simply the best way to do things with an H23 VTEC...

for the last freaking time the p28 is fully tuned with b-flys removed.............. vtec is set at 4800

i opened the top end last night and noticed white rings around the pistons..... i measured the bore and guess what its too big .20 too big......... they boared the block .45 instead of .25 the block has 2000 miles and new pistons and rings and i did notice a little smoke when the car got hot............ what a shity luck i have. after all that time, money, and effort some ******* so called poffesional cant even do his job. first time trying this machine shop and from this it will be the last time i go there

i'll be measuring the crank mains today. i'll keep you guys updated

Haha, yeah, I think people didn't read that the first time around

Whoa ! ! ! Told ya it was a build error, but dang! I would pull the pistons and check the cylinder walls for scarring. I'm not quite sure how big the clearances gotta get before things get seriously mangled w/ the cylinders.....

Yep; that's why I never take my car into shops anymore and do my own work. And anytime I get machine work done, I inspect it visually, and w/ my dial caliper if necessary. You just can't hardly trust anyone.

Measure the rod journals too. I am very curious as to how they set the clearances.

Ive said it time and time agin, when built right they will run hard and run reliably...

Try 8200 rpms for 5+ years!

No problems what so ever...

the rod that threw the bearing #2 cylinder that is, i cant get a clear spot to measure the length o fit..... the bearing has left good mark on it................

looks like a machine error so far...... but i'm still going to use the h22 with 89mm bore.... im still getting 2.3

rideless for now
