Default jdm type r b18c in my 95 civic ex

for anyone that knows anything about putting the jdm type r engine in a 95 civic coupe.. can u tell me tha problems or worries that you might get from doin this..

EDIT - What year is the Type R engine?

Some of the newer JDM Type Rs use bigger 36mm axles. You'll want to buy axles for any 94-01 Integra at your local parts store if you get a swap without axles or with the huge-*** axles.

Here's what you'd ideally want from the donor Type R:

Engine, tranny, axles, shift linkage, all sensors intact, as many mounts as possible, and of course the alternator, starter, distributor, etc.

In addition most JDM motors come with cut headers, so you'll need to buy one for an Integra Type R.

You'll also need upper and lower radiator hoses for a 96-01 Integra, a throttle cable for a Del Sol VTEC, and you can use an intake meant for a 99-00 Civic Si as well.

I run a 99-00 AEM cold air intake on my B18C5 - it's flat blakced, but you can see it here:



Bolts in easy and there's no modding to do at all. Some people use the ITR one, but you have to move the coolant overflow bottle and rig a few things.

For engine mounts:

For the timing cover side mount you will need to get the cast-iron bracket from any 1994-2001 Integra and also the aluminum mount as well. The stock Type R one will be fine.

For the rear mount you will need to use a 1994-2001 Integra rear bracket. The actual rubber mount that bolts to the rear subframe can be the stock civic one or the Integra one.

The topside tranny mount can be the Civic EX one - it is the same thing.

The front mounting brackets need to be from an Integra 1994-2001, but if you want to keep A/C then get the A/C bracket for a Del Sol VTEC model. The actual mounts that bolt to the underside of the framerails need to be the stock Civic ones. BTW - keep your EX A/C compressor also.

I would also insert the energy Suspension mount inserts while you've got the mounts out.

Wiring? Two methods:

Method #1:

You'll want to keep your Civic EX engine harness and use it on the JDM engine because the JDM harness will either be cut, or it will be ghetto stretched because their ECU is on the wrong side of the car in Japan. (Or ours are wrong - take your pick.)

Keep the Civic injectors, because the Type R ones won't plug into your engine harness. You can hack and splice the wires to the injectors, but I don't recommend that.

You will also notice that you won't be able to plug the distributor right in. Why?

Distributor change:

First of all there will be a minor difference in the plug style on the distributor. Some people will say "get an OBD1 distributor" but they must think that OBD1 distributors are cheap or easy to find used. The Type R distributor will have one big plug on it, while your stock Civic and it's engine harness has two plugs. All you have to do is unpin the two lowest fat wires from the Type R distributor and repin them into the extra plug on the EX engine harness.

Here's a picture of the OBD2 type Type R distributor. The arrows are pointing to the wires you need to unpin. This is a picture of an unaltered Type R distributor:



So here's that extra plug on your EX harness with the two wires already ran into it. Notice the wires are the exact same color, making it "idiot proof" so to speak. I'm glad they decided to keep the same colors:



Alternator plug change:

The plug on the B18C-R alternator won't plug into your EX harness. There are two ways around this. You could either find an OBD1 B Series alternator, or you can swap the voltage regulator from your EX alternator into the B18C-R housing. The B18C-R will have a square plug while the EX harness will have a round plug. Simply pull both alternators apart and swap the voltage regulator. You'll know which part it is because the plug is part of it. A few 8mm and 10mm bolts are all that stand in your way. Sorry I have no pics of this.

After doing these minor mods you'll need to change the VTEC solenoid from the B18C-R to your Civic EX one. Why? Because the JDM R one doesn't have a VTEC oil pressure switch, and the ECU you'll be using will look for one. It's an easy swap.

Wiring Method #2:

If the stuff above seems a bit much, then simply go out and find any 1996-2001 Integra engine harness, preferrably GS-R or Type R, and PLUG IT RIGHT INTO YOUR CIVIC'S UNDERHOOD CHASSIS HARNESS. Of course you plug the harness into the engine first.

Some people might say "but the OBD2 engine harness won't work!" and that's bullshit. Here's proof:







So now what do you do about an ECU?

HAVE YOUR STOCK P28 EX ECU RECHIPPED TO RUN THE TYPE R ENGINE

Why buy a jumper harness to run an inferior speed-limited BS Japanese P73 Type R ECU? Why use a jumper harness and have to wire up extra OBD2 bullshit and run a USDM P73 Type R ECU?

Don't.

Contact Kenji Plennert at kenji211@tampabay.rr.com and have him rechip your stock Civic EX ECU. He does it for cheap (ask him since the price is probably lower than when he did mine) and the engine will run better and throw less check engine lights.

If you choose to run this ECU you will also not have to add ONE SINGLE WIRE to your swap if you use the 96-01 Integra GS-R/Type R engine harness because the P28 does not look for the knock sensor. The knock sensor is something you usually have to wire up if you run the Type R ECU.

Also the ECU can and will make better power. I baselined 175whp/122ft-lbs. of torque to the wheels on a DynoJet with the Kenji ECU and only other mods being intake and exhaust.

EDIT:

I meant to say that when you run the 96-01 Integra engine harness you don't have to repin any distributor wires, you keep the ITR injectors, and you don't have to swap the plug on the alternator either.

Yeah I knew it was he JDM engine seeing as how I posted accordingly. I also stated B18C-R in some of the walkthrough stuff.

Why did you restate it was not a B18C5?

probably because it's stamped b18c and most newbies like me dont realize that the JDM itr motors lack the "5"

Very nice writeup btw. I handled the alternator and dist slightly different. I cut the alt plug off the ITR harness and soldered it onto the civic harness. I also spliced the dist plug from the itr harness to the wires from the two dist plugs of the civic harness. Seems to work okay so far but re-pinning seems easier

my buddy used a USDM ITR engine harness and it was plug n play , super easy. From what I've seen, the Kenji tune is on the rich side

Mine made good numbers and wasn't too rich, but then again mine was actually a tad lean because my fuel pressure regulator was trimmed back too much.

After I added a V-AFC and bumped up the fuel pressure to fix lean spots, I took it to the dyno and made some KILLER midrange gains:



See how lean I was at spots?

I can attest to the not-so-great gas mileage, but that's the price you pay for a safe running engine that makes good power for the mods.

That's a killer deal.

Hell if you get the ITR ECU you can sell it to someone with an EK who needs it for like $250.00 or so and make money off the deal if you already have a P28 to be rechipped for $85.00.
