Why is my car starting to backfire??Help Please!!
Ok my setup is a h22 in a 92 civic with intake, stock open header, and a mugen chipped p28...When i first did the swap i never had any backfiring running open header and ran very strong. It started when i had a muffler shop weld 3 feet of 2 1/2 piping to the collector...Sometimes it doesnt seem to run as strong as it use to...My dad was behind me other day and i got on it 2nd-4th gear and he said he saw flames. I did a compression test on about 3 weeks back and it was 260 all the way across...I will be replacing the plugs, plug wires, cap, and rotor to see if that solves my problem. If it doesnt what do you all reccomend i do and what could be the reason to backfiring? All help is appreciated
I havent moved it since i got the swap...I guess ill check it tomorrow and see if the bolts have somehow came loose.thank!
I dont know what the fuel pressure is set to..im using the stock FPR and stock civic fuel pump...Would the chipped p28 be causing me to overload on fuel...Someone told me to check my timing because hte p28 might have altered it...I will be checking that 2morro. Should i set it to the stock 15degrees...Im unfamiliar with timing on the h22..I know the white mark is TDC but what are the red marks and which one is 15 degrees? Please post ASAP as i will be doing all this 2morrow morning.

its a chipped p28...I heard on h22s stock timing is set at 15 Deg BTDC at 750 RPM which is one of the red marks.
Ok...I changed the plugs and it ran a ittle better and pulled a little harder in vtec...If i drive it normal and shift around 3 it didnt backfire or pop...But if i drive normal and shift around 4-5k it will backfire sometimes light and somtimes really loud...I Checked the timing with a non adjustable timing light...There was 4 marks on the flywheel the white + which is TDC and then about 2 inches away was three little marks...The middle mark is lined up between the pointer on the block...Is that where it should be and what do each mark mean starting from the bottom? Please help me!! Could running it open header have caused me to burn a valve?? It idles perfectly...I can get a video of what its doing if anyone is willing to help i would appreciate!! I will double check myself about the timing tomorrow.

It is rare but it can happen. That is probably not your problem.
Shoot me a PM if I forget tomorrow, I have a few things to do after work.

running extremely rich plus exhaust leak = exhaust backfire
after you let off you accelerator pedal air enters exhaust leak into exhaust and mixes with hot exhaust fumes containing unburnt fuel and creates an implosion in your exhaust. try getting all new gaskets for exhaust and tighteng exhaust system. i've found most exhasut leaks tend to be at the doughnut before the cat.

Ok well i finally got the timing thing figured out and my timing is dead on exact at 15 degress btdc where its suppose to be...<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by bigxclumzy »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">i've found most exhasut leaks tend to be at the doughnut before the cat.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Not running a cat...just 3 feet of piping welded on to the collector...i guess i should check all the bolts and get a new manifold gasket...I just dont see y it never backfired b4
