Default distributor swap...obd1 to obd2?

will an obd2 distributor off of a b16a2 work with an obd1 b16a3? does it even matter when it comes to distributors and what type of obd the car is that the distributor came from?

No it doesn't matter b/c there isn't such thing as ob1 or obd2 distributor. Just make sure the electrical connectors are correct. Also make sure if its for vtec you get a vtec distributed.

you sure about that? In order to switch and obd1 motor into an obd2 car you have to switch the injectors/distributor to obd2. I could be wrong.

I think you can use an obd2 dist on an obd 1 car but you cannot use an obd1 dist on an obd 2 car since the obd 2 ecu looks for the crank fluctuation sensor that the obd 1 dist doesnt have. IM not sure if the electrical connections are different though. Is this corrrect!!

you will need to repin the plug on dist as the obd1 has 2 plugs and obd2 has 1

The only other diffference is the crankshaft fluctuation sensor or is that located elsewhere. When switching the connectors just do them by color right just like doing an obd0-obd1 dist connnector switch. Any pics of this. How many pins are in the each of the obd 1 connector and how many are in the obd2 connector.

I dont believe it will work.

I just put an obd2 dist on my obd1 motor and it worked fine for the most part.

I dont think the vice versa switch will work. Call Distributor King(they are a sponsor) they will help you out. Very courteous.

Here's how I ran an OBD2 B16A2 distributor in my fiancee's 1992 Si HB with the OBD1 engine harness:

I have grown tired of trying to combat the guessing and misinfo I see here daily. If you don't know for certain, then please say so if you're just guessing. Some people state **** as "matter of fact" when it's 100% bullshit and I hate that.

EDIT:

There were some incorrect replies here before that pissed me off, but apparently someone deleted them so now my post look s a little out of place in terms of the text just below my pics.

Very nice, I like seeing the pics.
Looks easy as **** just wanted to make sure since everyone has different information.
Do you know if the crankshaft fluctuation sensor is? Is it in the distributor?
Just wondering!

No problem bro.

The crank flux sensor is not located in the distributor. On OBD2 only engines the crank flux sensor is found in the oil pump housing on the lowest point of the engine on the driver's side of the block.

The distributors internally on OBD2 and OBD1 are identical - only differences are the number of plugs on each. Pre-OBD dizzys are completely different though, and you cannot swap pre-OBD dizzy with any other OBD series car.

Well you can switch an obd 1 dist on obd 0 car, with an obd1 ecu and connector switch.

Cool so you can do obd 1 ecu and obd 2 distributor or
obd 2 a or b ecu and obd 1 distributor.

This makes sense because i see others using obd 1 and obd 2 conversion harnesses and dont need to switch the distributor.
THanks, JASon

obd2 sucks i know that-To do an obd 1 to obd 2 swap or ecu conversion you will need to add a 4 wire o2 sensor after the cat, and also the crank flux sensor but will not have it on the obd 1 engine so will through a code na dneed a obd 2 engine to go with the obd 2 ecu. THe best thing to do if you are doing an obd 2 engine like a type r is to do an obd 1 ecu so you dont need to do the wiring for the 2nd 4 wire o2 sensor and crank flux sensor. PLus obd 1 can be reprogramed with a hondata or something im not sure if you can do that with obd 2 ecus.

OBD2b has imobilzer in the US that sucks!

I just installed an obd2 dist from distributor king (TD84U) onto an obd1 B16... car is obd2, harness is obd2, conversion to use an obd1 ecu(eg6 b16a) The injectors are also OBD2.

Works perfect.

I love doing wiring for the honda like the tricky OBD 0 DX engines those are fun adding injestors and resistor box and all the other wires for vtec and 2nd single wire o2.. Or switching obd 0 car and doing an obd 1 conversion like making it a four wire o2 and adding all the other wires for like a b18c in a crx, civic,da integra.

It's not that simple because of other differences, such as pre-OBD cars with multipoint injection use an injector resistor box, while OBD1-up cars don't. Also o2 sensor types vary from pre-OBD to OBD1 as well.

OBD1 and 2 and much more similiar than pre-OBD and OBD1.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Cool so you can do obd 1 ecu and obd 2 distributor</TD></TR></TABLE>

Yes. I run a rechipped OBD1 P28 ECU on my fully "OBD2" Integra Type R swap complete with the full "OBD2" engine wiring harness from the 1998 Integra Type R including injectors, distributor, alternator, etc. You can only do this with Integra harnesses though, because the OBD2 Civic engine harnesses are totally different.

A few pics to prove it.

B18C5 in my EH2:

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">or
obd 2 a or b ecu and obd 1 distributor.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Yes people do this all the time when they use OBD1 ECUs in their OBD2 cars with the simple plug and play conversion harnesses.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">This makes sense because i see others using obd 1 and obd 2 conversion harnesses and dont need to switch the distributor.

Exactly.

Actually the accord and prelude obd 1 have injector boxes. On the prelude swap I did that was obd 1 I still had to do the injector box for the peak and hold injector type injectors.

In a nutshell:

OBD2 look for these things that OBD1 does not:

1. Extra o2 sensor
2. Fuel tank pressure (gas cap loose will cause a code)
3. Crank fluctuation sensor

Also some codes that OBD2 likes to throw that OBD1 will never throw:

1. Catalyst efficiency low
2. Random misfire on cylinder (fill in the number)
3. Evap system leak (gas cap loose usually)

In a nutshell OBD1 is way more tuner friendly. It throws less codes and there are multiple programs out there for OBD1 ECUs and some of the best stand-alone engine managements are based on stock OBD1 stuff, such as Hondata.

OBD2 makes things trickier when trying to do simple mods such as a nice freer flowing catalytic convertor, or even simple header installs will cause the secondary o2 code to stay on.

Sorry. My mind is in the Civic aspects of things. I own 3 Civics (1992 CX with B18C5, 1992 Si with B16A2, 1990 Civic STD with 11:1CR D16A6) and never post anywhere else nor really mess with Accords or Ludes.

Ive done one and once you do one every other swap seems like in and out. I charged 800 for the one i did should have charges 1000. You have to cut a huge hole in the floor by the shifter and run cables instead of the regular shift linkage. THe swap is perfect now but throws a code for Four Wheel Steering since some preludes have that in the ecu. I thought that was funny that it has that code. But i hooked up a toggle to turn the MIL on and off when needed to check for other codes so the light isnt always on blinking.
