Default Timing belt, clutch, and ECU upgrade

OK, i am getting a prelude. I had some more questions, When do timing belts normally burn out? I'd like to replace it myself and save a few hundred $$. The prelude im getting will be between 50-70,000 miles. With all those miles the clutch will go out, what clutch/where should i get it? Also you guys told me about the hondata ecu upgrade, I have no clue what that does, does it add power or something? Thanks

Damon

first off...timing belts need to be changed around every 60,000 miles. Do you know anything about how to work on cars b/c timing belt can be extremely difficult. For the clutch, if you dont have any mods for your car then your not gonna be needing a better clutch..just stick the the stock one. and same thing with the Hondata, if you have no mods for your car then dont bother yet. what it does is it is a computer that allows you to tune your VTEC engagement, your fuel maps, and all that other good stuff...the more you have done to your car, then better the hondata will help.

I plan on modding my prelude, so i will need a new clutch, and with the hondata, if im understanding, it just helps the managment etc, it doesnt add the hp. The mods I'm planning on doing are cold air (aem), cat back exhaust, headers, hopefully a turbo in the future. Thanks

as far as general maintenence read your owners manaul if you have one, also use the search, that is what it is there for, as all your questions can be answered with that.

First off your WRONG its every 90K up until 97-01 its 105K or 6years on timing belts that is what Honda reccomends. Drive the car till the clutch slips. Correct honda data is not needed with no mods, possibly start with a vtec controller.

jsut cuz honda recommends it doesnt mean its all taht great. they recommend 7500mi oil changes, and 100k spark plug changes, does it mean thats fine and dandy too? Whats the big deal spending the few hundred bucks and changing it a few thousand miles early, instead of risk ******* up ur engine?

and if you drive the car till the clutch slips, you risk damaging the flywheel because eventually the rivets on the disc will wear a groove into the friction surface if you wear the disc off too much. again, if you know u have a **** load of miles on the car, it won't hurt to change it, cuz there's only so much time left on it anyways.

personally i like to do preventative maintance instead of repairing ****. you save urself alot of headaches instead of dealing with unexpected downtime.

as far as hondata goes, personally I think its retarded to pay a few hundred bucks to do what you can do for free with a rom editor such as crome or uberdata. All hondata really is, is just chipping the ecu over and over again. And its not true that a stock engine wont benifit from tuning. Any engine will benefit from tuning, because in stock form it will obviously be tuned consevatively, there is always some power left to be extracted. Of course the gains will increase when your engine is more modded. but you can still extract power out of a stock engine

sorry for the confusion, uberdata and crome are just rom editors, they are freeware you can download off the net.

if you have the means and the konw how, u can tune your car urself on a dyno with a chip burner and the rom editor. basically the same way hondata works, but if your going to have someone tune it for you, your gonna need to find a tuner that is capable of doing so.

60k and 100k are two different things

i guess i got lucky because my clutch slipped for a good 15k mi before
i got around to replacing it and the flywheel was fine, i just needed to be
resurfaced.......and lightened
