Default Next level Mini ME- write up (Work in Progress)

MOTOR FINISHED PICTURES ON PAGE 2

Inspired by BauleyCivic's Mini me write up, I went out and did a d15b7/d16z6 mini me head swap in my eh2 hatchback. Pulled harder then before was surprised. Depending on sources, you will get different opinions on how fast it is. I also recently got a z6 tranny. It was well worth it! I personal think its fastest then a d16z6 because the b7 flat pistons up the compression combined with the small combustion chambers on the d16z6 head. That makes up for the .1 liter that the d15b7 block/crank lacks.

Im 17 and currently an unemployed so I can't afford a b or h series so I have no choice but to work around the d. well I decided to go with this set up:

SET-UP
1. d16a6 block and crack more displacement = more torque, the bore on all 1.5/1.6 d-series motor is all the same, just the crank is different. (60 bucks)
2. shot-peened ls rods. Thinker, stronger, why not? (came with the block)
3. d15b7 pistons. Flat = higher compression. (35 bucks)
EDIT 7:00PM @ May 09 2004
Learned that d15b7 pistosn will not work with a d16 block so im going to use the 3. stock d16a6 pistons.

d16a6 pistons (came with my block)
4. d16z6 head. The vtec head off 92-95 civic SI/EX (120 bucks)
5. stage 2 zex cams 59300 (180)
6. valve springs and ti-retainers and flat stainless steel valves. I have not yet bought these but I will soon enough.

I will be using a d16y8 2 layer gasket.

According to http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/D.htm I will have a 11.03:1 compresion ratio. With a resurfaced deck and head, and flat valves I'm aiming for about 11.2:1 compression ratio.
EDIT 7:00PM @ May 09 2004
Learned that d15b7 pistosn will not work with a d16 block so im going to use the stock d16a6 pistons.

According to http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/D.htm I will have a 10.2:1 compresion ratio. With a resurfaced deck and head, and flat valves I'aiming for about 10.4:1 compression ratio.

Ok enough chatter, let begin the project:

Parts check list:

D16a6 block:

Ls Rods:

d16a6 PM6 pistons:

Sorry pistons are dirty for now

Ls rods vs stock d16a6 rods:

D16z6 head vs d15b7 head:

Some obvious facts: The d16z6 head is a off a vtec d16z6 motor, a vtec motor from 92-95 civic ex/si models. The non- vtec d15b7 head is off the motor from a 92-95 civic dx/lx model. The d16z6 head has its sparkplugs torwards the front of the head, the side that is closer to the bumber. The d15b7 head has its spark plugs on the back side of the ehad, side side closer to the firewall. The d16z6 head has a smaller combustion chamber as compared to the d15b7.

Started to dissemble to 2 heads:

Using a 10mm socket and wrech, unbolt the bolts in the right sequence. Sequence will be up soon! Once you unbolted all the bolts, you can pull the motion assebly off and have full access to both cams.

B7

After removal of the motion assembly.

D15b7 cam:

VS.

Z6
Taking off the top piece:

Here is the motion assembly:

D16z6 cam:

Notice the vtec lobes that the b7 cam lacks.

I got the block on the engine stand using:
M12-1.25 metric bolts. 12 is the diameter and 1.25 is the tread. You need it about
5 inches long, depending on your engine stand.

Mine were too longs so I used washers as you can see

Updated on May 14th 2004::
I start to take apart the valve train.

ValveTrain:

I used a valve compressor. set it up, put it so it sits on the retainer and the other end on the other side of the head in the combustion chamber:

Then as you compress the valve, the keepers will either pop out of will show you that you can take them out:

Keepers are out!:

remeber not to lose the keepers! the keepers are the d16z6 and d15b7 heads are interchangable

Spring will uncompress when you remove the valvespring compressor out. and everything should be removable:

And the valves, out is goes:

Six down, 10 to go!:

Sorry for the crap pictures. That's it for now, I'm still gathering my parts, this is a work in progress and I will update every time I get something done. I'm hoping to get this motor in my car by 3 weeks. Any feedback, opinions, flames welcome.

Update: July 02, 2004

Couple things came in, my Supertech valve train:

My Crower Stage 3 soch cam:

I then got my head resurfaced, intsall supertech valvetrain and a valvejob done to my head:

My headset which includes valve cover gasket, sparkplug garmets, head gasket, intake manifold and exhaust manifold gasket:

Then im going install my Crower Stage 3 cam soon, and paint my valve cover and that should finish up my head work for now.

Any suggestions on valve cover color?

nice.. i'm on the same boat as you, ls rods, d16y7, y7 head with regrind cam, new pistons.. speaking of which.. where did you get yours, i need some high comp pistons for my y7. I got a y8 intake, hondata intake manifold. Should be a fun build, if you can get anymore of thoose pistons, hit me up bro

You can't use D15B7 pistons in a D16 block. The wrist pin location is 3mm lower on the B7 pistons meaning that they will smash into the head when you try to start the motor. I'd use d16a6 pistons if you are using a D16 block.

Well i cant use those d15b7 pistosn so im going to stick with the d16a6 pistons. We can always go with the after market forged pistons but im building a d because i have no money. Good luck with your project too!

Why didn't you mention that the z6 head has vtec where as the b7 does not. I believe there is only one vtec head with the spark plugs on the firewall side of the head.

compared to what?

Flat top pistons higher compression ratio compared to dished pistons.
Flat top pistons lower compression ratio compared to domed pistons.
d15b7 = flat.
d16a6 = dish.

I believe all d16 blocks are the same as of bore. 75 millimeters so all pistons are interchangable. Play with this site: http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/D.htm and use whatever piston is best for your application.

I'm really hoping for 13.5 on a 75 shot, on street tires. I figure with shot peened rods and built head, i can handle 75 shot with management including, 310 cc injectors, fuel pump and fuel preesure regulator. im aiming for about 125 wheel torque. that means at 5252 rpm i will have 125 hp. So i'm aiming for at least 137 whp without the bottle.
