Avon Tech R race tires?
Has anyone heard about these tires? They look similar to the new Hoosier's and Kuhmo's.

Making the best of a double post:
The tire rack says they meet the DOT requirements, but have they actually gone through DOT certification or are they just "good enough" without any official pass on the tests?

I don't think Tire Rack would sell them it they weren't DOT approved.

I never thought about that before but it's true. There are lots of places that sell competition tires that aren't street legal but not tirerack.
I guess it's up to whether or not the SCCA and other sanctioning bodies will allow them relatively late in the tire-buying season. I know one GS Subaru 2.5RS driver who really, really wants them to be legal for SCCA SoloII.

**Caution: While Tech R radials meet U.S. DOT requirements, they are not intended for highway use as the expected miles of wear from their racing tread compounds is greatly reduced. The Tech R is not recommended for driving in wet conditions where there is the risk of hydroplaning. Drivers should drive cautiously at reduced speeds in these conditions.
Says they meet us dot requirements so does that mean they are approved?

I would assume so.
I'm still waiting for a comparison to be done between these and the RA-1's

It is my understanding that tires to not eplicitly need to be "approved" - the DOT stamp on the side of the tire is the manufacturer's guarantee that the tire meets the DOT requirements, but the DOT does not actually test the tires and "approve them"
per the informatoin avaliable here, these are DOT legal tires.

Avon has been making race tires for a while. The only ones I've seen in the US were formula car tires or slicks mounted to Caterhams. Looks like they're breaking into the US DOT-R world.
i've driven on Avons before.
had them on a Super Seven; the dot version was called "Avon ACB-10". very awesome dot tire.
i've also used their pure road race slick (non dot). good slick, although i prefer the Goodyear (430 compound).

Just because a tire is DOT approved does not mean it is approved to run in SCCA events. They have to have a set number of different sizes available before the end of April for a given race season to be approved for said race season. I do not have the rule book in front of me to give you the specifics or number of sizes, approval application, etc.

4 diameters, and 6 sizes by 30th April to be approved for the season. Avon/Tire Rack seem to have met that requirement:
205/55ZR14
205/50ZR15
225/45ZR15
225/50ZR16
225/45ZR17
275/40ZR17

There is an interesting and informative (esp re SCCA Solo requirements) discussion about these tires on SCCA forums:

Last summer at BRIC vintage races at Road America I noticed about 99% of the cars used Avon road race slicks.

Wasn't Avon purchased by another company recently...I thought that I had read that somewhere...anyone else read that, or am I thinking about another tire?
EDIT....looks like they were bought by Cooper, which also bought Mickey Thompson...interesting, a friend works for a Cooper tires store...
