Like the title says its shaking only under acceleration. It feels similar to when the lug nuts start to come off. It doesn't do it when cruising or under engine braking. What could cause this?

Alittle background info, on thurs day i put my stock springs back on and while dropping the susupension the left side cv axle fell out. we put it back in no problem. I checked it and it doesn't seem to be problem.

Also the problem occurred last night when i went over a bump (while turning). Its kinda of hard too explain but the turn veers off to left. I took the turn at about 50-55 and the road i was turining on is at an angle like this / ( not that exaggerated but it angles in that direction.) Right after i went over it and gave it gas it started.

i 'm trying to figure it out right now so fast replies would be a plus. Anything to check?

are you sure nothing inside the CV joint got fucked? also did it seat properly?

i know these are elementary questions steve, just knocking the simple **** out of the way.

 

the car is still on jack stands so i don't know if its still doing it now. it was this morning. The CV axle is seated in there correctly, i just re- checked it. that was the first thing i checked. My first impression was that it was the axles, the shaking increases as engine rpm's increase.

One other bit of info, the engine seems fine in neutral. i reved it and the rpms climbed normally.

 

check your motor mounts as well. it could be one of them is starting to go, so you may not see anything major. that would justify the "settling" of the rattle.

 

new front and rear motor mounts, with ES inserts. The tranny mount looks fine as well as the drivers side mount.

 

rims are secured?

tires werent skipping were they?

anything loose in the engine bay that could have been tapping the hood?

 

rims were tight, all done with a torque stick

tires weren't skipping, the vibration is noticeable at about 3k rpms under moderate throttle.

nothing loose, it is a violent shaking of the front end and steering wheel.

 

is there anyway to check out the steering system? a violent shaking like that sounds like my friends sentra when the rack was going.

on her car it would pull to the side right after the shaking started

 

with out looking at the car it is hard to say. this is usually a bad inner cv joint, whether it is in properly or not. also inspect your radius rods coming off the front cross member. make sure they are secure.

 

well, i recently replaced the right radius rod. so i checked that right away. i also pulled it out and made sure it was installed correctly, which it was.

i also just jacked the car up ( with jackstands supporting it ) and let it run in gear. It appears the inner pass. cv joint is vibrating, So hopefully this is the problem. I guess i'll be buying a new cv axle

 

go to carquest and get an axle. they are like 50 bucks and have a lifetime warranty if you save the receipt. i run them in mine.

Well it seems to have fixed itself ( to a certain degree).

I had a friend come look at it, we ran it on the jackstands and checked for any vibration with the cv axles. We both decided it wasn't vibrating, I may have jumped the gun wanting to find the answer . We turned the car off and checked for any excessive play on the cv axles, intermediate shaft, etc. It was still vibrating, so we decided to lower it and go for a drive so he could get an idea of what it felt like.

Well the vibration *seems* to have disappeared until 65 mph where it is alot less violent. It almost feels like a wheel weight fell off now, which one did on the side that is vibrating. So.....................?

This basically has me stumped, I'll get the wheel balanced again and see if the vibration above 65 mph goes away. If it doesn't i'll replace the cv axles.

I've got my money on a wheel balancing taking care of it. My car used to shake pretty badly at 65-70mph...got a balancing and that was the end of it.

 

I have the same thing, shaking from like 60-70mph. I just put new tires and rims so I know my rims are balanced. It doesnt really bother me but if you find your problem im sure I have the same one.

 

Well the vibrations are back.

It seems to come an go when there is any kind of shock to the wheel. I.E i hit a bump today and the vibration returned. I just wanted to know if that would indicate a bad cv axle or point to another problem.


I also was considering another possibility, i had an alignment done and my caster was off. i started a thread about it based on theh responses bought a replacement radius rod.

I decide to put the stock springs back on and when reinstalling the stock springs we had a problem getting the damper fork to line up. MY buddy pryed while I put the bolt through. This made me start to think that possibly the lca was bent as well as the radius rod.

So on to my question, Could the new un-bent radius rod, change my caster for the worse, which would cause the vibrating problem? When we test drove it my buddy was watching the front pass. wheel and said it appeared to be moving up and down.

even if the LCA is bent it would not have any direct cause orway to createa vibration, the worse that could happen is thatthe suspension would justbeabitstifferandless responsivealthought he bentlca could slowly strech a radius rod, I doubt it has anything to do with it. The problem will bein one of the moving parts, you havent bent one f your rims have you ? (what with the bumps)

But I would hazard a guess the problem lies with the driveshaft and mostlikelyone of the inner joints bearings (whichever side yiou say its coming from, Thehousing itself could possibly be scored on the inside from a bad bearing tat has unseated etc).

I wouldnt go as far as to put money on my my guess yet but could you describethevibration in more detail please and how itsounds/harshness at different driving speeds and going over bumps etc.

the vibration feels like my lug nuts are loose, which they arent. Its basically like a left too right motion. that increases in severity as speed increases.The vibration can be seen on the steering wheel ( wheel is actually moving left to right about 1 inch at 60 mph). Also the front end can be seen moving if you look at the a pillar/hood.

 

Sounds like the inner CV joint, Try driving it soit does it for a couple of minutes then pull up, jack the front of the car up, then once its safely raised lightly touch (quickly though so as not to burn yourself) each inner cv housing to see if its hot or warm, If it is then theres your problem and youll just have to rebuild that driveshaft (its not as hard as ppl make out btw).

 

I ordered the new cv axles this afternoon. i'll update the thread tom. evening if they fix the problem.

 

i put the new cv axles on last night, and no more shaking. woot!

one of the guides on the bearings was broke and needle bearings were falling out. I'm guessing that is what caused the vibration, but it was on the opposite side of where i thought the shaking was coming from.

nice one, you should just clean our and save the parts from the old driveshafts like the good bearings, rubber boots, shafts themselves, etc. Then if you have any issues in the future then you can just rebuild the current ones

 

i would but the core charge was 62.50 per axle. So it would cost me 125.00 to keep the old axles.

 

I dont understand what you mean, so did honda do them for you and keep the old ones or sumthing?
