Review on the new de-mod (removal of ATS FD and 8lb flywheel)
Headed up to D's place Friday after work so we could drop the tranny and swap out some parts. We changed the XACT 8lb flyweel for the stock one and swaped out the ATS 4.9 FD for the stock 4.4.
My impressions? Well I've had the 4.9 and the light fly for around 2 years (had a spoon 11lb fly for a while, replaced it with the XACT) and I must say it is by far the best mod you can do. After leaving D's with the stock setup, the car felt like it had no power. I had to cruise around town in 4th now instead of 5th because there just wasn't enough power to get around town in 5th. Also cruising on freeway, I had to drop down the 4th if I wanted to pass anybody quickly where with the 4.9 you just drop the hammer and go in 5th gear no problem at all. One plus was gas millage thou as I was able to get close to 350 miles per tank and it's a little quieter in the car. But if I had to do it over again I wouldn't think twice about it. Anybody that has never driving a 4.9 equiped car, find someone that has it and try it, you'll fall in love.
Big thanks to D for helping with the swap and supplying the stock FD and flywheel (thanks for resurfacing it too). We did it pretty quickly, except we forgot to steak the countershaft nut so we had to split the case again and do that. Good think we remembered, or you'd all be seeing a post on here of me looking for a new tranny case

Gas light comes on @ around 300 miles.

I got around 220 miles to my tank on the way to Atlanta this weekend with an ATS 4.9 FD. We were also cruising close to 100mph so I was in VTEC a lot of the time. 350 miles would be nice, but I'd rather have the ATS.

Talk to Rodney, he can give you a clear comparison/description.
But, I'll surmise he'll say get the 4.93 hands down.
Best mod I did as well.

I've still got a ton of work to do on the car. It probably won't be for sale for about 4 months. I want to wait till June or July to sell so I can buy a 2004 model cheaper because the dealers are trying to make room for the 2005 models.

The 4.7 is fun. D has it on his but I haven't drivin it enought to really tell a difference. From what D says, the 4.9 is far better.

The ATS FD is a lot better than the JDM FD. The JDM FD is a mid way compared to the us and the ats.
I would recommend the ATS for those that want power everywhere and the JDM FD for those that want a mild upgrade.

on the ats 4.9 fd,i had that and a toda flywheel in my itr and it made all the difference in the world.
very worthy mod if you can afford to have it installed.

What is the top speed with the ATS final drive?
I'm hitting indicated 125 on VIR's front and back straights...

i don't understand this mod for daily drivers/street driving. you'd always be revving the crap out of the motor. forget driving on long trips for any period of time. 5500 RPMs for like 5 hours would not be cool. even if you drive on the interstate to get to work or school, cruising in that part of the powerband can't be good for the longevity of the motor.
i'm sure it would be cool for a track car, or if you swap in te 4.9 when you go to the track on the weekends, but i would never run a 4.9 FD in my daily driver. rod knock would come that much quicker.
i want my motor to last.
i'm not knockin anyone here, so don't start hatin me, i'm just putting in my two cents.

it's really not THAT bad on the highway. about 500-600rpm higher, that's not that much.
I just drive slower now. Ironically, I think the ATS is going to save me from speeding tickets

Actually it's a must have mod for SM as long as that's the class you intend to entirely set the car up for. The difference in lower gearing is especially noticable.
[waiting patiently for Ken to poke his head in]
RPM is raised roughly 475 more.
Around town the mileage is actually better and acceleration off the line is more agressive. I tend to cruise in higher gears.
Highway when cruising at a reasonable speed like 60 to 70 is no big deal and gas mileage is only lowered minimally (no I never did any calculations) but if you're driving an R you ain't doing so for best gas mileage anyway. Gas consumption only comes into play above 85 mph and at and above engagement. The need to down shift for passing as already mentiioned is lessened unless you really need to pick up your *** and get along.
