Default failed smog ref...will this work?

i have a b18c1 in my civic and i passed the visual, but failed the functional and emissions part. the only things that were wrong were my HC levels and my timing. my timing set off at 12 and it shouldve been at 14....my HC levels exceeded the max. by 9ppm going 15mph and exceeded by 4ppm going 25mph. if i fix the timing will it help lower the HC levels to help me pass? what will work? how can i fix this?

HC levels

max.60 meas. 69 (15 mph)
max.43 meas. 47 (25 mph)

Did you do a complete ignition tune up?
Try a bottle of that emissions pass stuff and get the cat really hot by driving around at highway speed for like 10 minutes..

what do you mean complete ignition tune up? yeah i did drive around...i drove about an hour to the smog ref...

does the emissions stuff help lower your HC , i plan on obviously changing the timing

my main question is that if i change the timing, could it lower the HC level enough for me to pass?

yes your timing would affect your HC, make sure you air filter is clean, your oil is freshlied changed, your spark plugs, and wires. make sure your cat is warm (driving for a good 45min to an hour) and you should be good

I would set the timing to 14 and then go to a pretest and see if you could pass. The pretest is like 15 bucks, then if you pass go to the ref and pass again. Good luck.

doesn't really matter if it's a regular smog guy, he could still get pulled over and sent to the ref, you know what that means??? big ol waste of money, and i don't know why he would want to go get it illegal any ways he still has one free trip to the ref. and the guy that always passes you is a complete idiot he could face up to 7years in jail and i think a 30,000 fine

Advancing your timing will increase your HC levels, since it's firing closer to TDC. I reccomend the gas additive "Garuanteed 2 Pass" (G2P) to all of our customers who are jus a notch off from passing their HC levels. Seems to work from them.. You can get it from kragen for about $12 or so.. maybe cheaper if you look around.

BTW how many miles on the cat?

correct me of im wrong, but being closer to TDC, wouldnt that lower HC? because HC is caused by fuel in the exhaust and firng closer to TDC would burn off the excess fuel correct?
also i do plan on using G2P just in case...

before u go into the ref, sit outside and rev ya engine for like 5 mins, it makes the cat conv work better, i kno because i saw it with my own eyes on a car hooked up to the smog sniffer.

firing closer to TDC is retarding timing, b/c stock time is 16btdc (before tdc). so advancing i think would allow for time for fuel to burn b/c more combustion stroke by advancing ignition.

Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) would... well before the piston reaches it's full upward travel. So the the closer you get to TDC would be advancing since you're getting closer to the TDC.

-Max, you may be right.. But let me double check on this.

As you advance your timing, HC goes up because you have less time for combustion.

replace the cat, and instead of running that guarnteed to pass crap get some denatured alcohol in the paint supplies aisle of home depot and marvel mystery oil so you don't dry all the rubber seals up from the alky. I did this and my beater with 250k on it passed with ease.

ok guys....i dont wanna replace the cat becasue it costs a lot of money i dont have right now, also because i am only off by a little bit on the HC. so therefore the only things i failed were HC by a little bit and and the timing was off. my main question was if i fix the timing back to stock would this help bring the HC levels dwon enough for me to pass? i personally think it will after reading some or your guys posts, but i wanted to see the general concensous on it
