Just put on some Wearever Gold MKD-465's I got from Advance Auto Parts on my gf's 1997 Civic EX. I've changed pads/rotors countless times on my cars (Mazdas, Nissans, Acuras) and NEVER had this happen.
The fit was so tight with the pads on I had to beat the caliper down with a hammer.
I think the MF'er at Advance gave me the wrong kind - anyone know the dif between the wearever gold's & silvers?
Any ideas???

did you seat the caliper pistons down all the way? sometimes there's a cross hatch in the piston itself, and you have to turn them in to seat them properly.. just a guess! goodluck with it.
same thing happened to me on my friends last brake install. the brake pad was the exact same one but the pad was too thick. i went back to the auto parts store and they gave me another one which wasnt as thick.
- a hammer should never ever be used to install a brake caliper
- did you compare the new pads with the bad/worn pads to make shure they are exactly the same
- brake pads are cheap and very critical part buy OEM / OEM spec

yeah - they are the same "shape". The pads fit in the caliper housing great - they just seam to thick. I checked the Advance site afterward and the "MKD 465" pad is listed as on option - AS SILVER - not Gold as the guy sold me.
According to the site there is a Wearever GOLD - MKD 273 - but it says "Except EX". WTF?
Here's a link (that prob wont work)

ex is not the same part as the lx,dx according to the web site you have the correct part , it's just not the "gold" series like you were told
it sounds like it might be a problem with the linning thickness to me

This might just be totally off the wall but how tight its your e-brake cable now?
Maby the cable had to be adjusted because of the thinner pads and now that you put something thick back in there it may be too tight.
Good luck with your problem though even if this was useless.

not all civic model pads are interchangable. This actally happened to my autoteacher when he was fixing his sisters civic. She had a Dx, they put EX pads on, couldn't move.

This Civic has an "EX" on the back and 2 little drum brakes on the rear. It seems all EX's have 4 wheel discs, except this one - but that is moot as the prob is with the front brakes.
I think I'm going to take the girthy pads back to the store and bring a micrometer so I can measure the new set they give me.
These same guys at Advance didn't seem to know what an impact driver was (to remove the putty-like screws on the rotor) when I asked for one - thankfully there was a fellow customer in the store that led me to them. He then said "hmm, must be a Honda"

my Girls civic 2000 ex has rear drums as well. she bought it brand new from the dealer so not all civic ex had 4 wheel disk
the problem lies with the pad thickness or the piston in the caliper not being all the way retracted.
did you take the master cyclinder cap off when you pushed the piston back into the caliper. then the pads will sit in and the caliper will slide back over.
or have you checked the rotor for warping?

I just ran the VIN through CARFAX and it came up as an EX...
Yes it has a sunroof. The CARFAX claims the car has a SOHC VTEC - but I'm not buyin' it. The valve cover doesn't say VTEC and from my experience, just about any Honda/Acura with a VTEC has it stamped there - and usually has VTEC decals on the sides.
and it has rear drum brakes.

are the rims stock? the pads may have made the caliper stick out and rub the rim thus making the car immobile. i've had this happen to a couple of my friends...

Haha...Yeah, well I got sidetracked by an individual that doubted whether or not this Civic was an EX or not.
my only guess is that you didnt set the piston all the way back in the caliper. it could be stuck. you should get that checked out or do a rebuild. a friends wrx went into the wall at sebring cuz his pistons were malfunctioning before hand.
