Default Shifer had serious play while in gear.....not anymore!

EDIT: I just noticed I cann't speel so don't bother pointing it out

Well, for the longest time, I thought that the tranny shifter linkage was damaged, I could litteraly move the shifter 3 inches left to right when the shifter in gear. So, I went ahead and bought a known good EX tranny to swap for my exisiting, and scheduled the day to rip out the tranny (yesterday).

Sure enough we get done taking what needs to come off up top and raise the car on the lift....then the problem shows itself.

NEVER and I mean never, let some crap shop loose your "bitch pin" and use a fricken nut and bolt instead! That was my whole problem, I never knew, because well, I assumed it was something difficult when it was something really easy.

Sure enough, we get a bitch pin from the tranny shop next door and the shifter is great now!

Oh and I added a Edelbrock short shifter, ES shifter bushings and Edelbrock Shift ****. WOW, I like my car again.

Time to re-do the suspension now :-)

Summary: If your shifter has a lot of play, check yer bitch pin and bushings.

Yup. It really freed up the day for me to run from Newport Beach, to Longbeach, down to Carlsbad and then back to Longbeach.

The reason so many people have a problem removing it is they are using a bolt or screwdriver that doesn't fit and actually expands the spring pin a little so their hammering gets them nowhere. If everyone would just read their helms or do a search they'd realize that all they need is a 8mm non-tapered pin punch. It's a whole $2 that only takes 2 or 3 hits with a hammer to get the pin out.

sweet... nothing like finding little fixes that make your car better...

I just had a similar happening when I did my timing belt and found out honda had set it a tooth advanced on the cam gear... car runs like a dream now... SOOO much more power...

How's the edlebrock shifter? does it have a bend in it or is it straight like the b&m?

Its a dual bend, one bend toward the rear of the car, and one toward the driver. I have one, and enjoy it, especially since I'm a tall SOB, so my knees would always hit the stock one and my hand just naturally likes sitting that low in the car!

I like it, it does sit a bit lower than the stock one and for my 6 foot frame, its comfortable. I think it would be just as comfortable for shorter people too cause you move your seat closer to the wheel hence bringing your arm closer

I had the same problem with my car! I almost bought new shift linkage when I checked the pin... and sure enough, some boner had replaced it with a bolt!

I switched it out with a new pin and it tightened right up!

I'm glad you found the problem before you pulled your transmission! At least now you can sell the one you bought.

Funny, my freind with an LS swap has huge amount of play in his shifter even when in gear. (Literally his 1st gear was as free moving as neutral) I asked him why was that and it was his bitch pin! I had no idea that such a small thing could make shifting such an uncomfortable mess! Even though he got used to it, I never could make a power/fast shift without banging up the gears a bit.

Isn't it always you set out to do something you think is complicated, buy all the parts then you look and see it was something stupidly simple. I thought my rotors were uneven, because when I braked, my car shook, so I bought new pads and rotors to the tune of over 150 (vw prices dammit) and found that my freind didn't tighten the lugnuts enough. brakes were fine.....

whatcha going do with the tranny?
